Fahrenheit 451 Theme Essay The theme for the novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, is that without a person’s own individual thoughts, nothing will change. I believe this is the main theme of the book because throughout the story a person's thoughts were the things that people were afraid of. The society banned books because they were afraid of the things the books whispered to the people who listened. Books hold a variety of knowledge that gives the reader power. Knowledge is power. Knowledge can spark thoughts and cause people to take action because of them. This makes people unpredictable and that caused the society to have a hatred and fear of books. Since the society banned books, they also made people busy. They allow no time to let anyone think. They give people things to watch and keep them occupied by screens often referred to as the “family” which is placed in a 4 wall room where there are huge screens and scripts at which you speak them at certain times, like having a conversation. You speak back and forth with the screens on the parlor walls like you would with a person. Yet they don’t give you anything to think about because you are reading from the script.
