Farewell to Manzanar Theme In the book, Farewell to Manzanar, by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D Houston, Jeanne struggles with finding her place in society after being interned at Manzanar. She tries to be unlike herself and more like the crowd, and because of that something goes wrong. The author uses Jeanne’s and her father’s internal conflicts to portray the theme that not being one's normal self can lead to future consequences. When Jeanne competes for the title of Carnival queen, she decides to use her race as an advantage in her run. She wears exotic clothes to flaunt her appearance to sway votes over to her side, “[knowing she] couldn't beat the other contestants at their own game, that is, looking like a bobbysoxer.
The book I read was Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen. In Nightjohn, a slave girl named Sarny is taught how to read and write by another slave named Nightjohn. Sarny slips up and writes a word in front of the slave master, Waller, can see. Waller blames Sarny, then Mammy until finally, Nightjohn says he taught Sarny. After Nightjohn’s injuries from his punishment, he escapes.

By doing so the character often compromises relationships with friends and family but it can also compromise the safety of the character and others around them. He is taken away from his family and put into prison where he is handicapped and locked away from the world. “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and 2081 are similar because Harrison dies in both, but they are different because in the book Hazel, his mother watches him die, but in the movie George, his father watches him die. Families are where we connect ourselves in relationships to past, current, and future generations. For many, family is not only a blessing, but our greatest accomplishment.
Parents. Everyone has them, and everyone either loves them or hates them. They give their children a house to live in, provide food and water, raise and teach them valuable lessons. But do they know what's best for them? Parents don't know the answer to everything whether they have been in the situation before or not.

In my family I have certain people that I can automatically go to and tell them my problems without being judged, and I always get the best advice. People in your family are the people you keep closest to you because they are blood, and they’re not friends that come and go. They are blood and will always be apart of you and want nothing but the best for you. People in a family that give the best advice are the ones who have gone through so many battles in their life because they know what it takes to overcome them.
