In Exodus 20:3-4, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.” The golden carp fills Antonio with credence because he is able to see it but, he cannot see God. It is stated that anything in this universe will not compare to him which is why Antonio is filled with immediate dread when he begins to question his faith. Antonio’s friend Cico, teaches him about all these new things will reminding him of how God is, “The god of the church is a jealous god; he cannot live in peace with other gods. He would instruct his priests to kill the golden carp-” (237). Ultima loves God and respects the wishes of all who want to stand with him or against them. The institution of the church is just apprehensive to make this step and accept what they do not understand, especially if Ultima’s intentions are pure, “I believe her social rejection is born of two elements of Ultima’s character: her cultural “mis-alliance” and her religious devotion” (Derby). Her devotion is confused with abnormality and by Ultima putting all her trust and care into Antonio she helped him make his own decisions without the pressures his parents were placing on him. The axiom between the church and Ultima is that they both hold their values close in order to help all those in need. Without any hesitation they do what their abilities allow them to do to save those who are decaying physically and mentally. If the church and Ultima came together to work as one, they would be an unstoppable force. The power of their faith is lighter than any bad in Las
