It was a warm sunny day; the children are playing; and the adults are chatting: yet despite this, a horrific ritual is about to take place. In the beginning of “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, Tessie was Hutchinson nonchalant and carefree about what was to happen to the “winner” of the lottery. Though, later in the short story when the Hutchinson’s are chosen, Tessie starts to protest and shout that it was unfair.Tessie’s instantaneous change in behavior parallels the theme: that people are not concerned with injustice until they are the victim of injustice. At first, Tessie arrives late to the lottery, but in a very light and good mood “Wouldn’t have me leave m’dishes in the sink, now, would you Joe...soft laughter ran through the crowd”
