Theme Of Leadership In Macbeth

Through Williams' Shakespeare play Macbeth, leadership is one of the most important themes. Today, leadership is still important and even though this play was written more than 400 years ago, we still value the same characteristics of a leader. In the play each leader demonstrates characteristics of a leader but not every leader is able to fit all the characteristics of a leader.
Leaders are those who care about those around them. Unfortunately not everyone in Macbeth was caring, but there were a few characters who were. For instance when Banquo gets attacked by the three murderers, he shows he cares about his son and screams, “‘Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly!/ ’”(Shakespeare 3.3.19-20), because he wants his son to run away. Lady Macbeth demonstrates she has the power to have an impact on her husband. She verbally manipulates him, telling him that if he does not do what she says, he is a coward and unmanly. Her constant manipulation drives Macbeth to commit murder. To impact him more with her words, in act one scene five she tells him that he does not lack ambition but that she believes he does not have the skills necessary to become king. She hopes that by telling him those words they will make him react, and he will start showing he does have the skills necessary. We can also tell Duncan has a great impact on others. When Macbeth is debating on killing Duncan, he describes what will happen when people find out about his death and says, “Upon the sightless couriers of the air,/ Shall blow the horrid deed in every eye,/ That tears shall drown the wind” (Shakespeare 1.7.23-25). Showing Duncan, who is free of corruption, leaves a legacy because people will be devastated and cry when the news spreads. Both Lady Macbeth and Duncan do what a leader should do, make an impact on others. Today making an impact is still an important characteristic for a leader. According to Western Governors University some of the great leaders who have made an impact in recent years are Condoleezza Rice, Barack Obama and Bill Gates.
