Perception is a way of regarding, understanding or interpreting something. This is a mental impression, so it can lead people to do things that they would not do if they knew the truth in reality. In many circumstances, different characters in “The Tempest “would perceive a situation different than another so it greatly changed how they reacted afterward. Prospero’s island is filled with magic and spirits so many times some characters were not sure what is real and what is a trick. The way they looked at the situation would greatly change what they would do in reality and how it would affect them. Based on the various characters and instances in the play, perception is more powerful than reality because it has the ability to stray people 's minds into false beliefs when Antonio holds worldly powers over his brother and Stephano worships wine, it strengthens the love between Ferdinand and Miranda even when they thought that Prospero is not in acceptance of it, and has the ability to permanently influence people’s lives as when Alonso 's dreams of finding his son are crushed and he wishes to lose his own life.

Perception is how the world is viewed every day. It has the ability to make earth seem wonderful and also terrible. Perception is different from reality and it is also definitely more important and powerful than it. Reality is almost never truly found so that is where perception takes over. A situation changes based on how it is perceived and reality has no influence on it. In “The Tempest”, it is apparent that perception is more powerful than reality because it makes people believe in false powers when Antonio holds worldly powers over his brother and Stephano worships wine, it strengthens the love between Ferdinand and Miranda even when they thought that Prospero is not in acceptance of it, and perception has the ability to permanently change people’s lives when Alonso has been permanently hurt by losing his son in the tempest even after finding him
