Throughout all four of the books I have read, all four of them seem to have the theme of beliefs and customs as one of the main topics of interest. All four of the books are able to extend their storylines and main ideas to help fit this theme within the book and show great meaning. The theme of beliefs and customs was able to be seen through characters, actions, and different lines throughout the story. First is “The Name of God is Mercy” by Pope Francis. This book was able to prove itself to be one of the biggest suspects for this theme. The reason for this is because throughout the whole book, Pope Francis is discussing with the reader, through different questions he has been asked by others, all different topics of the Catholic faith …show more content…

“Things Fall Apart” was able to use beliefs and customs through a towns traditions and religion. Throughout the book, you see all of the different characters practicing traditions that they have done for many years. They showed great pride in their customs and it was able to bring together the whole community. An example of this is when the people celebrated “The Feast of the New Yam”. This was when the people in the village of Umuofia worshipped the source god of all fertility, called Ani. The characters were also able to use religious beliefs to help guide them. In “Silence”, characters and their beliefs were able to have an impact on the outcome of certain scenes and the outcome of the book. Many characters, even the main character Father Rodrigues, broke their beliefs and apostatized their religion. It exemplified that they could not keep their faith in their toughest times and did not trust God. But there were also characters who kept their faith and stayed true to their beliefs. The biggest example of this was Father Garrpe. Father Garrpe kept his beliefs and did not go against them. Even though it caused him to be killed and become a martyr, it showed that he had faith in his beliefs. Juan was another character that was able to keep his beliefs during times of struggle. Just like Father Garrpe, Juan was killed because he did not renounce his beliefs. “Silence” was able to symbolize that following your beliefs and keeping a strong relationship with them can help people have a guiding light and give them hope and the ability to make right
