The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an incredibly written memoir about his struggle through the Holocaust. I have chosen to look at the motifs in this memoir. A motif is symbol or image that is constantly referred to in the text. In this paper we will focus on the motif of night and it’s significance to the story telling.
Night Theme Paragraph Imagine having a loving family, and you're the happiest you could ever be, but then you get everything taken away from you. What would you keep? In the book Night written by Nobel peace prize winner, Elie Wiesel, He answers that same question throughout the the story. He shows through his marvelous writing that family is the one thing he would keep, and that family is the one thing everyone should keep with them because in a crisis, family is the only reliable constant.
Night is a book reflected through the author’s emotions—visually, mentally, and physically. These emotions are condensed within the theme of Night, which was his loss of religious faith. The theme itself was reflected off the author’s experiences, hence the necessity of author’s craft. Elie Wiesel’s experiences of losing his father (physically and mentally) and watching innocent adults and children die (visually and physically) develops how the author is telling the story. In his loss of religious faith, he questioned God: “Why should I bless His name?
Elie Wiesel shared his story in the book Night to describe the common themes that came along with the Holocaust. Themes such as loss, faith, and hope were all expressed throughout his novel, giving readers some sense of how life was in these horrid days. Wiesel uses these themes to send a message to those who did not live during this era of when evil had prevailed over six million jews and other outcasts Nazi Germany did not see fit, so this mistake would never take place in history again. A theme affecting all of the captured Jews was loss.
In most cases, people will do what they have to do in order to survive. The book Night is about a young boy named Elie, and how he survived in multiple concentration camps. By reading Night we can see that family is the key to survival, which is important because those who don’t have family can often die. The main reason that Elie survives is because he had his father there with him for almost the whole time.
The book Night is written by a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Elie Wiesel. He shows us what it was like to live through such horror. Sometimes I think that he made stuff up, but unfortunately it was all true. There were many themes in the book like family, silence, and self-preservation, but there are three main themes all throughout the book - inhumanity, denial, and religion/faith.
The memoir Night is a text that displays several theme topics with deeply rooted emotional ties. One theme that is expressed and explored in Night is self preservation versus family commitment. An instance nearing the beginning of the story involves the former maid of the Wiesel family offering a safe place at her village so the family would not be taken away to the concentration camps. In response, Elie’s father tells Elie and his two elder sisters, "If you wish, go there. I shall stay here with your mother and the little one…" Elie and his sisters refuse, which demonstrates how they would rather keep their family together than protect themselves.
“ You don 't need religion to have morals. If you can 't determine right from wrong, then you lack empathy not religion. ”- unknown. Night by Elie Wiesel, during World War II, in Germany and Poland, Jewish people taken to concentration camps and forced to do labor.
As the well-known 20th century Indian peacemaker Mahatma Gandhi had once said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” Although, Gandhi was probably rebuking his fellow Indians as they longed for revenge against the oppressive British, this civil rights leader could have been scolding the Germans under Hitler’s dictatorship during the 2nd World War in Night, an autobiography by Eliezer Wiesel. During the teenage lives of young Eliezer, he experiences numerous inhuman horrors. In addition, his entire family is deported from Sighet, Hungary to the Auschwitz concentration camp with thousands of other Jews. Many more of these deportations happened at about the same time, changing the entire Jewish culture and history for years to come.
You can get mood from settings and themes of a novel. Since, a setting tells you the placement and time period of the novel it may give you a certain feeling. Also, with theme it is an opinion of that novel which the author tries to portray ; these opinions make you feel a certain way. For example, in the novel Night the setting is during the Holocaust in Germany, mass slaughter of jews, which was a very sad time . So, the mood of this book may be very sad because of the setting during Holocaust.
Carter Denbrock Mr. Haadsma English 10B 27 February 2023 TITLE In Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, a primary theme of the book is that you must remain strong, while looking out for you and your families, even in the face of conflict and tragedy. Weisel recalls many points in time where he remained hopeful even when it seemed impossible. He and millions of other Jewish prisoners were at the hands of the merciless Nazi’s, Weisel recalls many events where he could have given up but would not allow himself to.
Human suffering is everywhere in the world but it does not concern men or women as we find out in the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel where he is controlled by the Germans to work long hours, eat a minimal amount of food and sleep on wooden beds were the rest who are not chosen go to the gas chamber. The movie “The Help” is another example of a text were people suffer by others who don’t care how they live. In “The Help” the coloured are looked upon as dirty and disgraceful people who should work as house maids and have a minimal wage. Both texts involve human suffering from the suffering inflicted by others to being treated with no respect or how they live and being watched by other people who see them suffer every day and don’t do anything to
My theme for night was the preservation of self over others. Throughout the book many people become selfish and start to care only of themselves including Elie. The reason why I chose this as my theme is because I find it very interesting how under certain situations people change very rapidly. Elie soon comes to realize this , but does little to change it. Mostly ,because he needs to be this way in order to survive.
In the story, “Night” there are many different themes established. The one that stood out the most was freedom and confinement. The Jewish people were stripped of their freedom; the Nazi’s were forcing them to go to death camps and ghettos. The Jews never got to see freedom unless they survived the horrific event.
The road to a relationship with God is not straight, it is ever changing with challenges and curves and ups and downs. This is a main theme in the memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel, where Elie has a struggling relationship with God. He thinks that God has abandoned him and his dad so he does not feel the need to continue his relationship with God. Elie was excited about his faith but the holocaust makes him feel angry and confused with God. Elie 's faith excites him from a young age and he wants to learn more about God.
