One of the most popular books for young adults is the book, The Hunger Games. This dystopian novel, which is written by Suzanne Collins, is widely analyzed for its many themes. These themes about love, duty, and family are universal and give direction and purpose to the events in the story. Although there are many themes in this entertaining book, the most important theme is about sacrifice. In the book, The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins develops the theme, sacrifices for friends and family are difficult but rewarding, through the actions of Peeta, Rue, and Katniss as they strive to overcome their respective challenges.

At the beginning of the book, Collins describes the Capitol’s tribute-picking system and the choosing of Katniss’s little sister, Prim. Katniss knew that Prim would die if she entered the arena, so she “shove[d] through the crowd...allowing [her] a straight path to the stage...With one sweep of [her] arm, [she] push[ed] her behind” her and sacrificed herself for her sister with the well-known phrase, “I volunteer...I volunteer as tribute” (23). This sacrifice clearly supports the theme and shows the power of Katniss’s love for her sister. The tribute was willing to sacrifice herself in order to keep her family safe and she continues to do so throughout the series. Katniss’s sacrifice was eventually rewarded because it started a chain of events which resulted in the death of a President, or rather “dictator,” Snow as well as the overthrow of the Capitol.
