Throughout much of O’Connor’s works, there is this idea that a character needs redemption, as Dorothy Walters suggests in her book, Flannery O’Connor. Walters also states when these characters are enlightened, it is often “through catastrophe.” In O’Connor’s “Good Country People,” this salvation through violence occurs for Joy. Through the evaluation of Joy’s downfalls in character and her misinterpretation of Manley Pointer, Joy has a horrific experience that will forever change her perspective and reform her overconfidence. Before Joy/Hulga even meets Manley Pointer, readers understand that she has a lack of experience in the real world.
2) This extract is found in “The White Album” written by Joan Didion, who is the creator of many significant different literature pieces, both novels and essays. “The White Album” was published in 1979, and is the first and longest essay in the book. In this essay Joan Didion essentially uses a women as a connecting thread to describe what was happening in America at that time. I believe that the woman may even be herself to a certain extent, trying to externalize all her thoughts. What is perceived from the essay is that Didion was submerged into the focus of some big events that were happening in that year, not only as a journalist but also as a bystander and a normal Californian.
For example, Mrs. Hopewell see’s her people as either “good country people” or “trash”. She also thinks that she is above both of those. Hulga, who shares some of the same views, is in a state of identity crisis because of her serious health issue. Due to the way Mrs. Hopewell and her daughter throw around opinions of people, they are truly blinded by the real identities of the people they come in contact with. When Bible salesman Manley Pointer encounters them, Hulga learns that there is more to good country people than she ever thought before, and as a result, her own identity is fiercely challenged, as well as Mrs. Hopewell, who thinks he is a “good country
The story takes place at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America, when desegregation is finally achieved. Flannery O’Connor’s use of setting augments the mood and deepens the context of the story. However, O’Connor’s method is subtle, often relying on connotation and implication to drive her point across. The story achieves its depressing mood mostly through the use of light and darkness in the setting.
There are many things that factor into reasons for loving someone. Often times when people think of reasons for loving someone, they only think about the immediate motives. People do not consider reasons outside the obvious. However, there are many hidden motives that cause people t love one another. While both stories include themes about religion, identity, and the way we view others, the endings are astoundingly different. Nonetheless, O’Connor’s main theme concerning the way we view other people, is the most significant in both short stories. Two stories “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Revelation” by Flannery O' Conner both share a similar theme. The theme most common throughout both stories is religion. The author uses racism and religion in most of her stories and characters all seem to have similar personality traits. A few comparisons between “Revelation” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is that both these stories start off quick and to the point. These two stories contain a strong sense of superiority of their characters.
Her final act towards the Misfit was not out of charity, but in attempt to save herself. Set in the South in the 1950s, the grandmother dutily satisfied the stereotypes that blossomed within her generation. She speaks of the older days, when children were more respectful, and good men were easier to find. However, she never expresses what defines a good man, which suggests her unsteady moral foundation. The grandmother also explicitly articulates the racism that was unfortunately common in the South, ironically prevalent in the religious and upper middle class circles like the ones she belonged to.

When reading a few of Flannery O’Connor’s stories, one cannot help but make a connection with her intensive stories and those of a television show. Both take mostly everyday people and exaggerate them into an absurd nature. Her stories and television shows use shock factors to draw in readers and viewers, respectively. While television shows tend to vary in themes and messages, Flannery O’Connor’s short stories tend to be focused on a few limited messages and themes. Television shows are mostly mindless channels of entertainment, Flannery O’Connor uses her characters not only to entertain, but to also cause readers to reflect inward and think.
Moreover, her place of upbringing would also play a major role on her work. Growing in the heart of South, she lived the heinous face of racism. She saw how people, blinded by hate and bigotry can commit grotesque acts of violence. A great majority of O 'Connor 's work deals with Catholic traditions and how they influence the lives of everyday people.
