Flannery O’Connor was very explicit in her detail of distrust, religion, and racism in her three short stories, and she uses many different symbols and themes to justify her beliefs. Her purpose of her stories was to show the American conflict going on in the world. She also wrote these stories on her own experiences and beliefs. In the story,” Good country people”, Mrs. Hopewell gives judgement of people who she can trust, which is, country people. These people are distinct from the majority of the world. “In this day and age, you get good country people, you had better hang onto them.” She had had plenty of experience with trash. Throughout O’Connor’s life she grew up in the south. She was known to write “southern gothic” fiction.
