Imagine abandoning all familiar surroundings and traveling alone to a foreign land for an extensive duration of time without the comforting individuals that typically surround one’s life. In the novel, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, by Ann Brashares, that is exactly what Lena, Bridget, Tibby, and Carmen, four inseparable companions, are obliged to do. After countless summers of innocent fun, the teenagers must follow their own map and learn how to manage on their own. Instantly, they fear their strong bond will deteriorate, for they will be without each other for two months. However, on the eve of their separation, the quartet comes across a pair of shabby jeans that fit each of their bodies perfectly. From there, they vow to wear and share these unique pants to emphasize their indestructible bond. As their expeditions commence, certain dilemmas pop into their lives, causing this fresh experience to be increasingly painful. Eventually, the girls search for redemption and use the pants as a guiding force to solve the situations at hand. The main characters’ actions in The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants illustrate that a true friendship will survive any obstacles thrown at it by staying in touch through the mail, reflecting on the past, and avoiding social obstacles.
