For this paper, I have decided to analyze the theodicy in Season 14 Episode 10 titled “Personal Jesus” of the television series, Grey’s Anatomy. I have chosen to focus on one of the main characters, April Kepner, and the faith-testing course of events that surround her throughout this episode. Furthermore, it is important that I also examine the characters and course of events that are present in April’s life. During this episode, April’s faith is tested throughout the day in which she suffers through various events, until there may not be any left in the end. The episode begins with April referencing and explaining the beginning of the Book of Job, in which she mentions the four faith-testing messages he received along with Job persevering and remaining a faithful servant to God. This episode replicates April having a similar experience to Job’s in which four events test her faith, hope, and integrity to God. The first message involves a women, Karen Taylor, who is pregnant that comes into the emergency room, which April cares for. April mentions what Jesus said as He died on the cross and what Job said when he was suffering, which stated “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Job kept his faith through the suffering and pain, which in the end brought him twice of what he had before. April questions if it would be worth it to stay faithful to God or would it be better to curse God’s name from the beginning. April is finding herself losing faith and questions where God was through all of the suffering. In the Book of Job, God was winning a bet with Satan during Job’s suffering.
