Big Stick Diplomacy

On September 2nd, 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt said ¨speak softly and carry a big stick¨, which was a saying in western Africa. He said this statement for the first time at the Minnesota State Fair, 12 days before he became president. This idea of peace coming with power goes by many names such as Big Stick Diplomacy, Big Stick Ideology, and Big Stick Policy. Big Stick Diplomacy refers to negotiating with other nations peacefully, but at the same time we would show the power of our militia. Big stick diplomacy was referring to our foreign policy, Monroe Doctrine. Monroe Doctrine was the foreign policy of the United States which was brought to society in 1823. Monroe doctrine stated that if any European nation tried to take any country in the western hemisphere, it would be taken as act of aggression, it might cause the US to intervene. …show more content…
