Throughout the text, “Theology of Liberation”, one of Gutiérrez’s significant focal points was that your actions are what determine if you are a true Christian. He stressed that it is not enough to just know and understand the Word, one must also practice what is preached by the Bible. What is preached is that love and charity are above all and is what God desires for mankind to strive to accomplish. To be loving and charitable leads one close to God, however hatred and evilness deters one from God because God is not present where there is no love. When negativity and evilness are, violence and chaos brews which is contrary to the peace God brings with His Being. Gutiérrez states that liberation is freedom “from all that limits or keeps human beings from self fulfillment..from all impediments to the exercise of freedom”. Liberation is not only just worldly but it also has a theological aspect to it. Liberation from sin allows one to reach complete freedom. Sin divides us from each other because it leads to hatred and evil. When we are away from each other it is more difficult to portray charitability and love unto thy neighbor. Where sin is present, God is not present and in order to be fully liberated we must have God by our side. Striving to deter and absolve ourselves from sin leads humanity into a tighter knit community and also in a tighter relationship to God.
