The theme of self growth and isolation can be seen throughout the novel Speak (1999) by Laurie Halse Anderson, which follows the main protagonist, Melinda Sordino through her freshman year. When Melinda is first introduced, she mentions a secret that she is afraid to talk to anyone about. Melinda later reveals to the readers that she was raped by a high school senior at an end of summer party. Everyone at school acts hostile towards Melinda for calling the cops and ruining what was the best night of their lives, unbeknown to them, that night still haunts her dreams. This causes Melinda to become isolated from everyone, as they only see her as the freak who called the cops.
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.

With indifference people are only punishing the victim and helping to achieve the goal of the unrighteous.

Basil was Mattie’s life, when Basil was arrested for manslaughter Mattie offered her home as bond to post Basil’s’ bail. Basil was released from jail pending his upcoming trial. One night, he left his mother’s home and never returned. Mattie refused to accept Basil’s abandonment; she avoided areas of the house that indicated his absence.
Writer Alexandra Robbins writes a non-fiction expose following the lives of various overachievers at Walt Whitman High School. The purpose Robbins conveys in the book is that college admission expectations have made high school a very cut-throat environment, leading students who try to meet these expectations to have deteriorating emotional and mental health. Throughout the book Robbins uses strong forms of imagery to get across the idea that stress is negatively impacting many students health and uses shocking statistics to show that students are turning to self –harm and suicide to deal with stress. Robbins uses imagery in a scene of a Whitman student named AP Frank who acquired seventeen AP credits in the course of his high school career.
Mass shootings In the article, “The Fear We Live With” by Jeva Lange (2018) she explains how mass shootings have affected many lives in the United States. She points out that people are very afraid of how the shootings are happening too frequently and America does not care to do anything about it. Mass shootings happen too much in the world and there is not one way to fix them.
One will think that when individuals are in groups they will mostly likely be able to help, and come to a person rescue, well that is the opposite of that. When people are in groups they tend to run away from the problem, instead of coming together to come to a conclusion. When one part of the group is doing something, the whole group is going to follow. Not one member of the group will have the guts to stand up and do the opposite of the group. It is like the whole group think alike.
Relationships help us through tough situations. In the film, Bridge to Terabithia, we are presented with many recurring issues, for example, Jesse Aarons’s bullies, Mr Aarons and Jesse’s relationship and most importantly, empathy and understanding between one another. The characters face many problems in which they rely on others for help. With these strong bonds, the protagonist, Jesse, is able to overcome these difficulties. After Leslie’s death, Jesse doesn't accept her death and is in denial.

As Cain divulges, introverts are put at a disadvantage from the moment they are born, throughout school, and into the workforce, not by any flaw of their own, but by a society that upholds what Cain calls the “Extrovert Ideal”. From kindergarten to office jobs, it’s safe to say that life in America (and other countries, mainly those in the West) is geared towards the gregarious.
She argues that what makes us uncomfortable in our lives is exactly the opposite of what we think it is. We are not scared that we don’t measure up to societal, familial, or personal standards. Quite the contrary - we are fearful that we exceed the expectations. The reason it frightens us so, according to her, is that we have the notion that standing out for what makes us unique will cause people around us to feel inhibited. From her perspective, that isn’t the case at all.
