Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology Technology is knowledge and science used to ultimately create something that can benefit man and allow for further development. Although technology can be beneficial, it can lead to fatalistic habits and poor lifestyles. In 1950, Ray Bradbury published the short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about an ultra-modern and technologically advanced house that is assisted by futuristic innovations. Ray Bradbury develops the plot by helping the reader differentiate the pros and cons of technology. Technology can be helpful in everyday life. Ray Bradbury supported this statement when he wrote, “The rooms were acrawl with the small cleaning animals” (Bradbury 9). The robot mice, and the other electronic …show more content…

Older technologies have been used since the beginning of time. For example, wells, wheels, and other miscellaneous tools date back thousands of years ago. These technological advances are far more significant than they seem. Over time, there has been much development, and new things are still being created every day. New technologies, such as life-saving medicines and surgical equipment, are crucial to humanity. In "There Will Come Soft Rains", "The dog frothed at the mouth, lying at the door, sniffing, its eyes turned into fire" (Bradbury 23). Currently, many technologically developed medicines could have saved this dog from any contracted disease it had due to neglect. On a smaller scale, kitchen and household appliances are an advantage of technology that is used in everyday life. This advantage makes lives trouble-free and allows for convenience. These appliances are time efficient and help maintain cleanliness in a household. The majority of these appliances were developed to be hands-off and mess-free. For example, the oven. The oven is the healthiest form of cooking with the lowest risk of cancer. It was designed to be time-efficient and cook large amounts of food simultaneously. In the short story, “the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly brown toast…two cool glasses of milk” (Bradbury 2). The stove is the cleanest, most energy-efficient, and …show more content…

Since it is so easily accessible, it can be hard to limit and lead to addiction. The main attribute of the house is the voice clock that breaks down the family's schedule and announces reminders and important events. It says, "Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine... eight-one, tick-tock, eight-one o'clock, off to school, off to work, run, run, eight-one" (Bradbury 1 & 5). The clock and house concurrently influence laziness by doing everything for the family. In the long run, this is worse for the individual and can result in more severe consequences. For example, depression and obesity: 41.9% of United States citizens are obese and 88% are overweight. Activities such as playing video games, watching television, and engaging with cellular devices are common causes of this issue. Automobiles are another common thing that have a substantial impact on society. In the text, “the garage chimed and lifted its door to reveal the waiting car” (Bradbury 6). Even though driving cars is a common practice, it can be misleading and harmful to the environment. Technology comes with ethical and economical strings attached. In today’s world, almost every household has access to a motorized vehicle for transportation. They have become a convenient necessity. The question is if people will see that the impact is great enough to find another form of
