Enrique’s Journey talks about the struggles of a teenaged boy named Enrique and his family in Honduras. The boy takes a dangerous journey to America in order to see his mother again. She left to find work in the United States when he was just five. She knew her children would not be able to attend school past the third grade. She does not want them to grow up as she did, in poverty. Yet, Enrique does not know why she’s left. Not making anything better, his family doesn’t give him straight answers. It is a very violent area but he is protected as part of a small encampment. After calling his mother, she helps him pay for a smuggler to take him across the river and into the United States. He crosses the river into Orlando, Florida. Finally, in over a decade, Enrique is reunited with his mother. The style the book is written in is not very formal. It suits its audience which consists of mostly young people. Enrique’s Journey is written in third person point of view. It is mostly told from Enrique’s perspective but also through other characters. The author wants to show those with privileged lives that they should be grateful. Also, that Enrique can relate to many immigrant children here. The book is very accurate using actual events Enrique went through. Sonia Nazario’s purpose for the book is to show those with privileged lives that they should be grateful. Also, that Enrique can relate to many immigrant children here. It is accomplished by telling of the struggles he went through to meet his mom again. The genre of the book is non-fiction. It fits into that because it’s tells Enrique’s true story. Enrique’s Journey is one of the best nonfiction books about an immigrant I have read. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading books that are full of adventure and
