Fear can be healthy, but also deadly to the human race. Fear makes people not do things that can harm them, which makes them stay alive longer. Not only does it keep people alive, it can also kill as well. Fearing something and being frightened of an object or thing can turn into a panic situation, which can lead to an untimely death. In the book Fear by Michael Grant the characters face that same reality. It has been a year since all the teenagers at the age of 15 and older and all the adults have disappeared like rabbit in a hat (simile ☺). There is a huge dome surrounding the towns of Perdido Beach and Coates Academy and no way out of the dome or the FAYZ (Fall Alley Out Youth Zone). This is a huge problem for all the people there because just like Sam said: He is saying that without light the kids cannot do normal everyday things like getting food. In the FAYZ the main food source for the kids is fish from the ocean, which Quinn (a friend of Sam’s and the Captain of the fishing crew) and his crew of fishermen catch. If there is no light, then the group of fishermen cannot bring in the demand of fish that is needed for feeding the children in the FAYZ. This also destroys the other food sources in the FAYZ, which are cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, etc. If the crops do not have sunlight, then they will not grow, therefore another vital piece for survival is gone as well. Another reason that people are fearful of the FAYZ going pitch black is they will have to use up another asset that is wood. Since they cannot see they will have to use wood to build fires to see and also keep people warm at night. Stated by Sam in the book:In end of the book Gaiaphage is reborn as Diana’s baby called Gai and tries to escaped the FAYZ and go out to the real world and destroy everyone in its path. Before that happened, Sam shot out beams of light at Gai, which caught her hair on fire. During that time, the FAYZ suddenly went to all pitch black to all the light making the dome for the first time ever transparent. At the exact time, Sam’s mom Connie Temple saw her son shoot out beams of light at a baby. Along with Sam’s mom, the other mother’s and father’s saw their children with guns, knives, and other miscellaneous weapons. In the parents eyes it was war zone. This makes the kids in the FAYZ fearful of what family members or other people might think about them. For if they thought that their families would be disappointed and afraid of what they have done and what they are once they got out of the FAYZ.
