Portrait of America In reading Portrait of America, there are many descriptive chapters about individuals who helped shape The United States of America. Not only did the examples range from Presidents, to successful business people, they also included an everyday aspect of citizens or even soldiers. While it was a useful tool for understanding the good side, and how the nation felt about a person or major historical event, it was also useful for exposing the bad and the ugly side. Having this nontraditional knowledge helped to make the book a worthwhile read.
All the way through the Ugly American, Louis Sears only acknowledged how “lucky” he was because of his luck in his political career; however, he couldn’t even acknowledge the instability of “the damned little monkeys” (page 12). “The damned little monkeys” are the Sarkhanese, and he displays disgust towards them. Instead of caring for them and their well-being, Sears obsesses and rages over a pointless comic, from the Eastern Star, that resembles his idiocy, and his tantrum shows how much he only cares for himself and not others. Also, does he even know anything about Sarkhan, and where he is at? Surely, he doesn’t.

This refers to a group of marginalized American citizens with origin from the Asian continent. The coming of Asians into America can be traced as far as the 1810s, between 1850 and 1905 a lot of Asians mostly Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos and later south Asian Americans immigrated into America in large numbers mostly as unskilled laborers. As their numbers increased rapidly1, ‘the model minority’ as they were referred to back then started facing racial discrimination in the U.S. This resulted as the other Americans saw them as a threat to job opportunities hence a generalized dislike towards them resulted. This was until the year 1965 when changes were made in the immigration laws eliminating race as an immigration factor.

The definition of beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially sight; beautiful or pleasing thing or person, in particular. In order for a person, place or thing to be considered beautiful it must reflect certain criteria developed by the beholder. Vulgar is derived from the Latin adjective vulgaris something that emanates from the masses of common people. Traditionally, vulgar meant commonplace, it now carries negative connotations.
Minorities have made significant strides towards equality in American society. In America the minority groups are being stereotype due to their ethnicity. The media has had a significant impact in passing the stereotypes to the work that have convey negative impressions about certain ethnic groups. Minorities have been the victim of an industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the "majority" at the expense of a minority group ideals (Horton, Price, and Brown 1999). Stereotypes have been portraying negative characteristics of ethnic group in general.
The Quiet American written by Graham Greene takes place in the 1950’s. A time period of the French Indochina war in Southern Asia, The Korean and Vietnam War. The French empire is trying to colonize the Indochina region which was an Anti-imperialist country at this time. China is fighting for their independence, Korea is in a civil war to pose a threat to communism. The central character, is Thomas Fowler, he is posed as the dull, delightful, and bright narrator of The Quiet American and displays traditionalism throughout his viewpoints on the world.
