Recommended: Role of theatre in education
The Federal Theatre Project was a New Deal plan, administered by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), during the Great Depression. The FTP came about during the height of the Great Depression, 1935, only four years before the Depression came to an end. The Great Depression has been referred to as the greatest economic disaster in the United States and lasted from 1929-1939 (history.com). During this time, nearly 13 million Americans were unemployed (history.com). The FTP was administered by the WPA in hopes to send many unemployed theatre professionals back to work.
This alcove of the basement museum will be designed to give visitors the experience of walking through the theatre. The current basement museum makes little reference to the theatre space upstairs. The history of the building and its role in the culture of the city is extremely important to the story of the assassination. For example, the reason doctors decided to remove the President from the building was because a theatre was too crude a place for a president to die, thus leading to their decision to move him across the street to the Petersen Boarding House. Ignoring the purpose of the building means ignoring a significant aspect to this story.
Florida Atlantic University’s Theater program provides experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. Being on stage can be one of the biggest thrills. “The best feeling on stage is when I’m completely swept away by the character in the given circumstances and I’m no longer there and it’s just me and the character” says Joe Anarumo. Fortunately for 21 year old Joe Anarumo, he has had plenty of those heart pounding moments. Anarumo started his career in FAU Theater in the summer of 2013 and will be ending it this spring, when he will be taking the stage for the last time in a French Restoration Comedy “The Country Wife” and William Shakespeare’s “King Lear”.
“Don’t be afraid to explore, ask questions and take chances,” my dad would tell me. You see, my dad, an engineer, tried to get me to question everything. He is never afraid to learn a little bit more about something he already knows and is always eager to learn something new; I take after him. I love to learn, and figure out how things work. It's not surprising, then, that I plan on majoring in engineering; what is, perhaps, surprising, is that these same habits of mind led to me developing an interest in and passion for theatre.
“One, two, three, four! One, two and three and four!” I was frantically counting in my mind. It was my first pit orchestra practice for the high school musical my freshman year. No matter how hard I tried, I just could not keep up with the fast tempo and puzzling key signatures in the music for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
100 years ago, the attempted annihilation of an entire race known as the Armenian genocide began. From 1914 - 1922, the massacres perpetrated by the government of Young Turks and later the Kemalist government aimed to eliminate all Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire (Armenian Genocide Museum - Institute). A population which had lived in the same region for centuries suddenly became nearly extinct. As for the cause, the outbreak of World War I provided the Young Turks an opportunity to solve the “Armenian question.” The Armenian question refers to the defence and liberty as well as fair treatment of Armenians during the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire (United Human Rights Council).
Standing on the dark stage, I took deep, slow breaths to calm my nerves. My stomach did somersaults and my hands shook. Fidgeting with my pink peasant top and ankle length yellow floral skirt, I made eye contact with my fellow actors. The closed curtain was the only thing separating us from an audience of five hundred people. One would think that after three months of rehearsals I would feel prepared for this, but I didn’t.
“GOAL!” My final kick as a U-14 soccer player ended the game with a score of 3-2. With that game, the team ended its season in second place, a great accomplishment for this motley bunch. As the season came to a close, and we were awarded our trophies, I was already looking ahead to high school. For years I knew that I would attend Bishop Hendricken High School, a school well-known for its soccer team.
Acting With today’s movies and TV shows coming out of the woodworks in rapid pace there has been a more of a demand for actors. Now there are tons of production companies making new ideas for films and TV. Some popular companies are Universal Pictures, Funimation and Warner Brothers. To get any job in acting you first have to audition to see if you fit the part of any characters, you will get turned down a couple times and sometimes you get a part that you were not expecting, but it’s your choice whether you want to accept the part or not you have a great deal of options on what type of actor you want to be. There are many different type of actors some focus on wanting to be known as a certain type.
The use of masks in theatre, both functionally and symbolically can be dated back to hundreds of decades ago, along with speculations that the earliest masks came from the Neolithic period. While it is yet unknown which civilization first created or developed masks, it is clear that the existence of these masks are not without justifications. The non-theatrical use of the word “mask” is often referred to as the concealing of “something from view”, usually the human face (Oxford Dictionary Online). However, in many different types of theatre, masks do not solely function for the purpose of concealing. The function of masks differs for different forms of theatre, and is dependent on the relevant attributing background factors.
Based on what I want to accomplish in my life, I decided that theatre would be the best route. I want to learn more about the world and be happy. I want to be in a field that is challenging and fun. I know I will learn the most valuable things from a theatre BFA, then with a science degree.
Imagine you are an actor arriving at an audition. You enter a waiting room and see all these people who talk like you, look like you, and are auditioning for the same part as you. Would you still have what it takes to show someone how you are different? Theatre has been apart of education in schools since 1965. It has helped guide people and it has given the world great entertainers.
Roman Theatres and Their Greek Counterpart In such a historically rich city such as Rome there are many spectacles to visit for one’s viewing pleasure. Typical sight-seeing tourists come through Rome expecting to witness monuments and buildings like the Pantheon, Colosseum and the Circus Maximus. However, one spectacle that seems to fly under visitor 's radars are the Roman Theatres.
For the past couple of year, acting is all I have know to do and it is something that I enjoy to do even though I do not get paid to do it. When acting, I do not have to be myself, but I am the character and when I am on a stage I do not get afraid or nervous because the people will not judge me. Some people will say that going into an acting major is not a smart decision because it's hard to get a job with it, but I'm willing to work hard and do
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players,” (Shakespeare), meaning the whole world is like a stage show and humans are the actors. The quote proves that life can imitate art even when it’s not recognized, art is everywhere you look, in places you never thought to look. Theater is represented in any imaginable way, so why is it not good enough for a simple required subject in school? Fine arts such as drama, dance, and art programs get cut from high schools due to the expenses that go into them. People say theater is not needed for the future, no help in the “real world”, and it’s not a life skill.
