Some emotions bring color to an otherwise dull world, such as happiness and joy. Though not all emotions are positive. One final example of how Công’s absence affects his son Bnh is his decision not to go to his father's funeral. Huong and Tuan had at one point known Công, but Bnh had not. Bnh's father was the story he was told. His father was the tape recorder that his mother had them talk into. His father was the high standard he was constantly compared to, that he never quite lived up to. When he found out that his “father” had died, he didn’t care. To him, his father has been dead since before he was born. The author writes,“But he was your father,” Tuan said. ‘No, he was your father. There's a difference.’”(Nguyen 231). Even though Công makes up only a fraction of the novel, he still greatly affected the emotional state of each character. Huong lost her true love, and then lost all hope of seeing him again. Tuan lost his dad, and he was disconnected from his family. Bnh never had a dad, instead he was given standards that he couldn't live up to. Huong was hopeless, Tuan felt a longing absence, and Bnh felt as though he was never good enough. Losing something you love can be one of the most devastating experiences someone can go through, and it can happen at any time. Spend
