Each of these authors and scholars have researched the themes of Thirteen Reasons Why, but they fail to focus on the most important theme expressed: the positive impacts on young adults. Themes presented included the problems of characterizing bullies, the deep topics mentioned, and the problems it’s caused among children. A commonality that these themes in the film share is that they stem by opinion and effects on the future children. The authors analyze these aspects of Thirteen Reasons Why in their own understanding and the point of view of parents of teens. While these views portray the TV show’s messages they focus mainly on the feelings and effects on the teens. Not many companies, movies, or TV shows want to talk about suicide because it’s a deep and dark topic. It is very hard for people to understand and explain, so people tend to stay away from the topic as a whole. To show suicide is a positive and useful ways requires the use of one of the five themes (Collings). These themes are public responsibility, media framing of suicide, professional practice, personal experience, and restricted reporting (Collings). Thirteen Reasons Why used the theme of both media framing of suicide and personal experience. They used media framing by showing it on Netflix and when Jay Asher wrote the book. Framing it around what they've already done and know wasn't offensive and wrong. They also show it from personal experience Some of the cast came forward about dealing with suicide of someone close to them as well as thinking about it themselves. This helped them get into a more realistic, relatable scene. The main goal of director Joseph Incapera was to make this more realistic and easy to relate to. This is something many adolescents have seen somewhere in their life whether it be in their schools or families. The importance of showing it through the media gives them a chance to relate to others, and possibly learn how to cope like some of Hannah’s friends did. Thirteen Reasons Why shows the importance of knowing about suicide and talking about the topic. Simply talking about it and realizing that others deal with depression and suicidal thoughts can help them gain clarity about the topic.
