Kevin Baietto Dr. Cotter Forms of Lit November 1, 2015 In the poem Talk the point of view is told in the first person by the author Terrance Hayes. Terrance Hayes was born in 1971 in Columbia, South Carolina. He not only is a writer but a successful artist and athlete as well. Hayes attended Coker College where he succeeded in his athletic success and earned his bachelor’s degree.
The book I read was Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The title of the book represents so much of the entire book even though it’s just one simple word. The main character, Melinda, was raped at a high school party while she drank too much. She later called the cops and lost all of her friends. After the party, she was an outcast.
There are many themes that are presented in the book Speak, such as to not be afraid to speak up about the truth. In the book, Melinda is a freshman in high school that is now an outcast after she called the cops on an end-of-summer party last summer. But there is more to the story. Last summer at the party, a guy named Andy Evans raped her. But no one knows the truth except Melinda.
Finding your true passion can brighten your mental health and change your life. Especially if that passion is art, just like Melinda Sordino’s. Trees in Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, serve an essential purpose as an object that symbolizes Melinda Sordino's mental health, and the growth that follows. Ever since she has been assigned trees for her art project, her life began to change. When she draws trees, it acts as an important reflection and checks in with her inner mental health and mind about the issues and feelings she is experiencing.
One night, one party, one person, one call, that is all it takes to change somebody’s identity and shape them into the person they truly are. Melinda Sordino is the victim of a horrible night that changed her life. In the novel speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Melinda is faced with many challenges. Melinda attended a party the summer before ninth grade. She wasn’t thinking about the consequences that come with drinking, she was not thinking about how one little action could ruin her relationship with those around her,one action that could shape her identity into who she truly is, one action that she would be to traumatized to tell anyone about.
Imagine yourself being a young teenage girl who’s been raped and now suffers from it. In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, tells a story about freshman, Melinda who experiences high school in a way nobody should experience it. The summer before Melinda’s before freshman year, she had experienced an assault at a party. Ever since that situation had occurred, Melinda’s suffers being bullied at school, has problems at school, and struggles with issues at home. Nobody at school will talk to Melinda including her “friend” since forever, Rachel Bruin.
Social Issue Identification and Discussion The major issue in the book “Speak” written by Laurie Halse Anderson is rape. Rape consist of so much more than the event itself, it consist of fear, loneliness, depression and all of the other emotions following the event. In today's day and age, rape culture is used in jokes, that makes it seem as if it is a normal thing that is inevitable when in reality is a problem that needs to be changed.
Most people believe that animated movies can’t show as much communication as a normal one can. Just because it isn’t acted by people doesn't mean that there isn’t communication there. In the animated movie Rango by Gore Verbinski, it still shows many forms of communications, including impression management, perception, culture and much more. Communication is everywhere whether it be unconscious or in things such as books, and animated movies.
The mistreatment of Indigenous people in Canada is a leading factor in the loss of their identity; a tragic consequence of colonialism and systemic injustice. “Totem” by Thomas King, an American-born novelist and member of the Order of Canada, conveys the message of the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples by the government with the use of various literary elements. King voices his opinions about the government’s terrible and shallow decisions they make and solutions they come up with. Comparatively, “I lost my talk” by Rita Joe, a Mi'kmaw poet and member of the Order of Canada, also speaks of the tragedies that the Indigenous peoples have faced, but through a more personal lens where she talks about her experiences as a former student of Shubenacadie Indian Residential School. Chapter two in the textbook Reflect & Relate an Introduction to Interpersonal Communication by Steven McCornack talks all about what “self” is and how to achieve complete fulfillment for one’s self which is also known as self-actualization. The components of self, as described in the book are, “ . . . self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem” (McCornack 39). Self-awareness is the idea in which one can take a moment to move feelings, beliefs, and other external influences aside and just evaluate oneself in a holistic perspective that is not skewed by opinions of others, etc. Having the ability to actually think about who one is brings a lot of power and mental stability in such a way that allows for improvement.
To survive in the world, it takes various skills and abilities that we have. We as humans use pure instinct and what we have learned throughout the years of life, consisting of what we know physically, mentally, and intellectually. Some may argue that physical capabilities are the most important aspect for survival, however research shows that emotional stability and intellect are much more essential. An essential ability for survival is emotional traits.
There are different types of nonverbal communication. Body movements is a different type of nonverbal communication. Body movements are the most noticeable elements of nonverbal communication. Body Movement consists of posture, gestures, face and eyes. A posture can say a lot of a person.
It refers to the patterns of communication, interpretation and adjustment between individuals. Both the verbal and nonverbal responses that a listener then delivers are similarly constructed in expectation of how the original speaker will react. The two key topics in class in the last weeks, for me. Two of the most relevant topics developed in the last weeks were: non-verbal communication and the barriers to communication. Everytime we communicate with another person or group of people, we have to take into account some factors other than what we are actually saying that can affect how the message is going to be received: body language, tone, intonation, facial expressions, and others; this is what we understand for non-verbal communication. As we saw in class “55% of communication is body language, 38% is the tone of voice, and 7% is the actual words spoken.”
In society today, communication classes are highly over looked because of our new developing technology. People don’t realize how much a communication class could benefit them. We have lost sight of verbal communication skills. This class has taught me to put my phone down and communicate with others. It has opened my eyes to the real world without technology.
