Group B – Question #2 Thomas Edison had huge impacts on the United States. Not just because he brought electricity to all parts of the country or because he created the high-powered phonograph, but because he also had an influence on the modern business world. Because of Thomas Edison the business and industrial realm were able to merge with science. In the United States, modern technology had an evident distinction between industrial America and the American home before Thomas Edison came into the picture.
Although Thomas Edison is most often accredited with the invention of the electric light bulb, he did not actually invent it. More precisely, he invented the “first commercially practical incandescent light”(Boundless). Edison and his team at Menlo Park, his laboratory located in New Jersey produced a light bulb with a carbon filament by October of 1879 that lasted over fourteen hours. After years of working, Edison unveiled his light bulb at Menlo Park on New Year’s Eve of 1879(Lighting a Revolution). However, Edison was not the only person working on an incandescent light bulb at the time.
Edison studied the light, power, and structure and became inspired to invent a practical incandescent lamp for everyday use, known as a light bulb. Many scientists practiced for years out of trial and error to invent a perfect bulb. After many fails of finding a fiber that would give a light bulb it’s perfect glow, Edison decided to use bamboo fibers. Finally he had created a bulb that would not melt. Even though Edison achieved his goal, that did not stop him from moving forward.
The Transcontinental Railroad made traveling more efficient and made a boom in the railroad market. The first incandescent light bulb was made by inventor Thomas Alva Edison in 1879. This was a huge scientific breakthrough for the future of electricity. People no longer had to use dangerous gaslights that could easily cause fires. Edison had created something scientists had been struggling with for years and finally made a long lasting, affordable light source.
Benjamin Franklin was a boy who was born Boston in the year 1706. Josiah, Franklin's parent, wanted to send him to school with the clergy but they didn’t have enough money, so he only went two years and did not graduate. Schooling for Franklin ended when he was ten, after that he worked for awhile with his father. Then at twelve, he worked as an apprentice with his brother James a printer who taught Franklin the printing trade.
Thomas Edison the inventor of the Light Bulb created new opportunities in America in a big way by providing new Jobs, and the creation of New Technology. The creation of the light bulb brought forth many things to the world and america. Thomas edison was known as The greatest inventor with the creation of the bulb. Many people didn’t know that there had been other inventors seeking the same result. Without the light it provides we would not be able to do as many things we can at this point in the timeline.
“One of the most famous and prolific inventors of all time, Thomas Alva Edison exerted a tremendous influence on modern life, contributing inventions such as the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture camera, as well as improving the telegraph and telephone” (Library of Congress) Edison was one of the best inventors of all time, With so many amazing inventions still contributing to modern life today. This shows a side of people glorifying Thomas Edison for his amazing achievements but completely overlooking all the bad things he did while trying to make a name for himself. “Edison’s detractors insist that his greatest invention was his own fame, cultivated at the expense of collaborators and competitors alike. ”(The NewYorker)
He also saw financial and commercial prospects in the light bulb. This man was named Thomas Alva Edison. He was intrigued by the idea of electric lighting and wanted to buy the product. Therefore, he made an appointment to meet with Woodward and hoped that they could come to a reasonable agreement.
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, by Louis P. Masur, describes what the true meaning of what an American is and how to strive to be one today. Franklin even says himself, “I am too much of an American” which is proven to be true time and time again (Masur 15). Franklin's autobiography is more than just a self-reflection, it was also a way to try and better himself through his gift of writing. His autobiography is considered to be one of the world’s first type of self-help book for this time period. Even still today Ben Franklin’s work and ideas are still talked about and his patriotism is still spread throughout the country.
For millions of years, numerous inventions have left lasting marks on society. What once seemed impossible is now possible, thanks to inventions such as Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone; Benjamin Franklin’s bifocals and lightning rod; Steve Jobs’ Apple products; and Larry Page’s Google. Yet one inventor’s bright ideas have been said to stand above the rest. American businessman and inventor, Thomas Edison, is the brains behind numerous inventions including the phonograph, motion picture cameras, and the incandescent light bulb. With nearly 1,093 patents, what was the path that led Thomas Edison to become the most prolific inventor of the 1800’s?
He was the youngest of seven children and his mother was a teacher. Thomas Edison helped invent over 1000 inventions, some of which include the camera and the microphone, but Edison’s largest success in life was the recreation of the light bulb, in 1879 when he discovered that a carbon filament inside an oxygen-free bulb could glow (Science for Kids). Significance: The most obvious significance of the recreation of the electric light bulb is that people now had easy access to a light to use after the sun went down.
Edison was one of the greatest inventors of the age. Most of Edison's inventions improved the technology in today's world and society. Edison became one of the most well known inventors during the early nineteenth century. Edison, raised as a poor, uneducated railroad worker, became one of the most famous men in the world. Furthermore, Edison studied the nature of electricity.
Thomas Edison is an American inventor and businessman, who has been described as “America’s greatest inventor.” His tireless work efforts and dedication to science not only helped him to create inventions that have advanced technology , but also become an inspirational figure for Americans. His improvements and inventions on objects that were already invented helped the lives of over millions of Americans. He helped to build America’s economy during some of its more vulnerable years as a new nation. Thomas Edison’s inventions have helped to advance our society though his dedications and knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and chemical sciences.
“Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” This was once said by one of the most famous inventors, Thomas Edison. He grew up to be one of the most famous inventors and invented many useful items, including the light bulb, telegraph, movie camera, and much more. Edison had a long and interesting life, and lived until the age 84. From the day he was born, Thomas Edison was a curious boy.
Edison was known world-wide as the wizard of Menlo Park, The Father of the electric age, and the greatest inventor to ever live. Also that when WWII broke out, he was asked to invent defencive weapons for submarines, and war ships. He also innovated things by using rubber, concrete, and ethanol. In 1887, Edison opened the first building committed only to research and development in New Jersey.
