Hobbes believed that “it is not possible for people to have both freedom and peace, since the state of freedom is a state of unlimited greed and war.” (Document C). i believe that hobbes is right about how there are many selfish people and if it came down to you or them, who would you choose? It is most likely that one chooses to save themselves because at a certain time it comes down to survival. Hobbes thought that we should have a ruler such as a king or queen because “democracy- allowing citizens to vote for government leaders- would never work.
Hobbes believed that man must escape their state of nature to be protected. Within this social contract the ruler had absolute power over the people which lead to their words and opinions never being heard. Hobbes believed that for the government to function properly, the people must obey the absolute monarchy and accept that their opinions are not being accounted. Hobbes explained, “And therefore, they that are subjects to a Monarch, cannot without his leave cast off Monarchy, and return to the confusion of a disunited Multitude; not tranferre their Person from him that beareth it…” (Hobbes in Perry, 22).

As you know it all resulted in wars and chaos. Thomas Hobbes believed that humans were crazy people and which needed to be ruled by a king or queen.(Leviathan) He wrote numerous books, one book which was certainly the best out of his collection was leviathan.
He was born in 1588, and died 1679. Throughout his life, Hobbes believed that the only true form of government was an absolute monarchy. He argued that, forcefully would be the only way to get respect from the people. He also believed in only certain people having rights. Hobbes believed in people who were born with rights that they hand over to the monarch and get protection.
I believe that Henry did reach maturity at the end of the story. Although the many events we saw in the story whether it was good or bad, Henry still fought in a war. He saw a lot and went through an experience that most people shouldn’t have to go through. In the beginning of the story, we can see that Henry believe war is only meant to create heroes.

However Hobbes believed that a sovereign could maintain power without deceit and manipulation. The world is driven by emotions that dictate what the world calls reality. Thomas Hobbes seems to disagree with this claim when he states how the world is essentially a complex machine that is solely governed by fact and logic. I disagree with Hobbes because it is evident throughout history and literature that emotions dictate the actions that create reality. Through World War II and The Things They Carried, I intend to depict how emotions fuel the beliefs that create and control reality for everyone. Even significant historical events such as war are driven by the emotional beliefs between the conflicting sides.
Thomas Hobbes in his Leviathan and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his Discourse on Inequality and Social Contract each attempt to explain the rise of and prescribe the proper management of human society. At the foundation of both philosophies is the principle that humans are asocial by nature, a precept each philosopher interprets and approaches in a different way. Hobbes states that nature made humans relatively “equal,” and that “every man is enemy to every man.” Life is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short,” he says, and “every man has right to everything.” Rousseau outlines primitive asocial man having “everything necessary for him to live in the state of nature” from “instinct alone,” and being “neither good nor evil.”
One his theories, stated in his book called Leviathan said that people are not able rule themselves because of how selfish mankind is and they need to be ruled by an iron fist. His political theory was that was also stated in Leviathan was that we should respect government authority under all circumstances to avoid violence. Hobbes was scared of the outcome of the social contract which meant people could get rid of the government if they were unhappy with what they were getting. In order to make well with the social contract he states in Leviathan that people should be completely obedient to the government. His reasoning was that if there was no government, there would be chaos.
He believes that the human condition, the traditions, experiences, and knowledge acquired by humans, is far to complex to be described by science and therefore avoids he commonly held views of political science from the Enlightenment Era. However, Thomas Hobbes, as he writes in Leviathan (1651) believed that all political phenomenons could be reported systematically as he equated all humans to machines, predictable by consistently acting in their self interest. [PG 3] Burke’s criticism that can be applied to Hobbes lies on three fronts; that the understanding human condition cannot be derived through logic; that consent, explicit or tacit, does not exist after the first social contract; and that a rebellion is neither possible nor effective when in a social contract. It is no surprise that romantic artists were very much at odds with the industrial revolution. As the above statement points out, artists of the romantic period tended to enjoy the ideas of the french revolution like freedom and equality, but completely hated the repetitive, mindless work of the industrial revolution. These artists felt that the idea of the factory system was killing people freedom and creativity. This opposition the industrialization can be seen through the works of romantic artists Mary Shelley and Ludwig Van Beethoven.

The other aspect concerns human powers of judgment and reasoning, about which Hobbes tends to be extremely skeptical. Like many philosophers before him, Hobbes wants to present a more solid and certain account of human morality than is contained in everyday beliefs.
