Thomas Hobbes was born on April 5, 1588 in Wiltshire, England. He graduated from Oxford University at the age of 19. Hobbes visited Galileo, an Italian astronomer and adopted the methods of the new physics. In 1640, Hobbes fled to Paris when English Civil war broke out. He joined the coterie about Mersenne and was invited to produced one of the sets. He published a materialistic metaphysics, De Corpore (1655), materialistic account of man, De Hominy (1658), and a work on the rights and duties of citizens, De Cive (1642). Hobbes viewed himself as the first political philosopher. Hobbes is best known for his book Leviathan. He grounds his political science in natural low and he is the father of natural light.
