He owned slaves and spent lots of money on the Louisiana Territory. According to Document 2, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to Edward Coles about African Americans. In this letter Thomas Jefferson referred to African Americans as pests.
Thomas Jefferson was a major player in the formation of the early republic as both an author and political figure. In the few years following the revolution Jefferson served as the governor to his home state of Virginia. During this time he began to write his book Notes on the State of Virginia which would be published several years later. Jefferson covers a quite a few topics related to the state of Virginia in the late eighteenth century and actively voices his opinion fully understanding that many of the readers may not agree with him. Jefferson enslaved more than 600 people and profited from the "industry." However, Jefferson knew that slavery was one of the greatest threats to the survival of the new American nation. He also thought that slavery was contrary to the laws of nature. Jefferson went on to sign various documents that would help pass laws that worked towards the final goal of abolishing slavery, which Douglass would approve.

He did not free the mother of his children but freed all of the children under his will. He put his own kids into hard working labors and treated them like slaves. He didn't pay anyone that he owned and would feed them according to the work they did. He is not a role model to anyone and should not have even been a president. Thomas Jefferson was a strict constructionist and the Constitution was silent about acquiring lands from other countries therefore Jefferson saw to approve a constitutional amendment to resolve the issue and satisfy his own interpretational beliefs but the Senate did not agree. For $15 million France offered the U.S. the entire Louisiana territory which was more than 800,000 acres from Louisiana to the Rockies and beyond and the two American ministers sent to negotiate the land deal seized the opportunity but went beyond their mandate of only negotiating for $10 million . While the incorporation of these new lands was a benefit and opportunity for the United States to grow in power and size, Jefferson had still qualms about its constitutionality.
The time period in which a certain piece of literature was written says a lot about the society at the time. Authors usually write about the events happening in their society. The Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson reflects what was going on at the time, so does “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King , Jr. These were both written because of the issues happening in their communities.

This quote is important because it allows me to understand that Jefferson has to die because he was the only person in the liquor store and was a black man.
In multiple letters and notes he wrote he expressed his guilt for the slaves and once the slaves paid off their debt and Jefferson’s he hoped to free them. Jefferson and his slaves remained in debt until the day he died. Jefferson believed that slavery not only deprived blacks of their liberty but had an “unhappy” influence on the masters and their children (Takaki 63). If a master is constantly punishing a slave and cannot restrain, the child’s master will imitate and master it, resulting in a nonstop cycle of slavery.
