Thomas Paine Revolutionary War Project Brandon Myers Mountain View 11-20-15 Thomas Paine was an early English American writer and pamphleteer whose writings such as common sense helped the people of the colony to realize that separation from Britain was a good idea. His papers and pamphlets helped lead to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Common sense one of his most influential pieces was a piece that stated that independence was much needed from Britain. Thomas Paine an English American writer born in England moved to America to write. While in America, Paine wrote many papers and pamphlets some which had the concept of separation from the British.
Thomas Paine wrote a series of articles known collectively as "The Crisis" to support his argument for independence from England during the Revolutionary War. Thomas Paine 's reasoning for writing this collection of articles is rather sound. The call to arms in this document calls “tens of thousands” to arms to battle Great Britain and their unfair rule over their country. Paine was justified in his writing, the unfair rule of the British government did need to be “called out” sort of speak.
Thomas Paine’s political pamphlet brought the rising revolutionary into sudden focus by placing blame for the suffering of the colonies directly on the reigning British monarch. Common Sense encouraged an immediate declaration of independence,
“These are the times that try men’s souls” (331), during which Paine’s purpose was “to enable this distraught people (and all patriots) to stand, to persevere, to have fortitude, and to fight” (Gallagher 87). Thomas Paine’s Common Sense written in 1776 compelled the American colonists to separate from their mother county, England. Paine asserted at the time that England only cared about its own economic status and cared little for the colonies (84). With this, Paine addressed that in the event of revolution, the colonies would prosper due to home field advantage and the heart and passion the militiamen have (123-124). Most importantly, after having dealt with England’s superiority, independence and a representative government would arise in the minds of the colonists (66). The Movement Begins If America did not have Thomas Paine where would we be? It was a brutal fight against the British when Thomas Paine wrote his pamphlets “ Crisis No. 1”. They needed a push to get inspiration to start understanding more about the fight for their independence in which he gave that to the colonist. Thomas Paine use of pathos was the best persuasive technique to persuade the colonist.
In the winter of 1776, during American Revolution, the still young America faced three major dilemmas: their seemingly imminent defeat, the moral debate between the Whigs and the British loyalists, and the panic and confusion of the American public. In efforts to settle the three American dilemmas, Thomas Paine wrote The Crisis No. 1 in December of 1776. In his work, Paine aimed to calm the American public and convince them to stand up to the British, and turn the war into an American victory. Thomas Paine, a local pamphleteer in the pre-Revolutionary War era, wrote a convincing pamphlet to any colonists who were not already supporting the war for independence from Great Britain. In his argument, Paine uses rhetorical strategy, an emotional aspect, and divine revelation towards the citizens to create a very moving, passionate, and convincing call to arms. The first line, “These are the times that tried men 's souls,” is one of relatability and preparedness for the oncoming difficult times. Paine starts his essay off with a refutation of his argument, stating that although he wants this fight, he knows it will be tough. Paine then challenges the men’s bravery and patriotism to their country by stating the line “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country.”
Paine states this in many ways he believes that the Americans would be just as strong or even better off if they didn't have the influence of the british. Saying, “America would have flourished as much, and probably much more, had no European power had any thing to do with her”. Paine realizes that Americans are coming together over their hatred for Britain making the country stronger. He also talks about how the British to refuse to negotiate anymore, “a new method of thinking hath arisen. All plans, proposals, &c. prior to the nineteenth of April, I. E. to the commencement of hostilities, are like the almanacks of the last year;...
Thomas Paine creates the image of a monstrous Britain looking to prey on the American colonies. The diction is so fanatical and violent that it would certainly stir up some anti-English sentiments among the colonists. Paine recognizes that many Englishmen fled the country to escape the tyranny of the crown and pursue liberty, yet this oppressiveness still exists across the pond. The tyrannical metaphors did not stop there for Paine. A couple pages later he penned, “…I rejected the hardened, sullen tempered Pharaoh of England forever; and disdain the wretch, that with the pretended title of father of his people can unfeelingly hear of their slaughter, and composedly sleep with their blood upon his soul” (Paine 47) when discussing the beginning of the American revolution.
The next display in our tour is a copy of the Colonial Informer, a newspaper published shortly after the release of Thomas Paine’s pamphlet, “Common Sense”. Paine was prompted to release his opinions towards the governing of the colonies after increased disagreements in Parliament. Paine supported the complete breaking of all political ties with England. His main reasonings behind this were that the British King and government were corrupt and also that the colonies were too geographically far away to be governed correctly by England. His writings caused many colonists to question the governing styles of the King.
The reality is that it was in the best economic interest for the colonies to separate from the English government. The goal was to establish the colonies as a republic rather than a dependent of Great Britain. This is exactly Thomas Paine’s aim in the document in Common Sense. Common Sense was an important stepping stone towards independence. Thomas Paine was a person who advocated and supported egalitarian principles. He believed that all people are equal and deserved equal rights and opportunities. Thomas goal was to influence to people in the Thirteen Colonies to stand for independence from Great Britain. The thirteen colonies were a group of British colonies on the east coast of North America.
Before this many Colonists did not know of the harsh injustices done by the British. They also did not believe that the cause for revolution was urgent. Thomas Paine showed them that the cause was urgent by explaining the wrongs the British had committed and why King George was a tyrant. He also showed them that America did not need the British Empire 's protection. This quote shows his reasoning “Small islands, not capable of protecting themselves, are the proper objects for kingdoms to take under their care; but there is something absurd, in supposing a continent to be perpetually governed by an island.”

Thomas Paine disagrees with the British government and the way they handling business he encouraged Americas to declare their independence. The Declaration of independence was a documented created by Thomas Jefferson that announced the split from the colonies and Great Britain, it. The Declaration of Independence states “we hold these…all men are created equal...with certain unalienable rights...that when any form of government becomes destructive... It is the right of the people to alter or abolish it (Jefferson, 1776)”.
