Despite of the Texas flag similarities to other flags, I am sure most Texans are proud of the state flag. Why? The meaning behind the Texas flag is what makes a Texan to be proud of its flag. The blue symbolizes loyalty, the red stands for bravery, and the white signifies purity; the star represents all of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, State, and Country.

It is not that new icons or symbols are needed to accurately portray what America stands for, but rather for people to start respecting one another for the different ways in which these icons and symbols are interpreted. A truly successful democracy, an ideal that is a driving factor behind American politics and foreign affairs, allows for a body of free thinking individuals to unite, when necessary, to work together toward progress. The shamrocks represent faith, hope, love, and luck ( they also support the old Irish legend that St. Patrick used the three leafed clover as a representation for the doctrine of the Trinity). However, a major effect of this rapid growth was the division of a nation, also known as sectionalism. Sectionalism is ones pride in their section and during the mid 1800’s, the recognized "sections" were the North and the South. When analyzing the causes and effects of sectionalism on the civil war, it can be concluded that territorial expansion played a huge part politically, economically, and socially.
