An independent government agency known as The Committee on Public Information was formed as a way to influence the public’s opinion which they did by using propaganda. There are many different forms of propaganda and many of them were used in WWI which author Joseph Joe Kaminski further discusses in “World War I and Propaganda Poster Art: Comparing The United States and German Class”. The answer to getting the public’s attention was by using different tactics to intrigue citizens; “The use of propaganda art was essential in galvanizing opinions and reshaping ideas during WWI” (Kaminksi, 2).
This poster was used to evoke sadness and anger in people, by showing children very close to the influence of Nazi Germany. The reason this poster is so effective, is because it was relatable to women and men who had children, and if America didn't win the war, then Germany could have taken over and converted their children to joining the Hitler
During the World War period of history there was all sorts of propaganda being used for and against each other during the war effort. Aiming for the citizen of that nation to be persuaded to help in the war effort in some way whether it be rationing of food, invoking fear, or a form of patriotic emotion. The World War propaganda primarily focused a lot on name calling, bandwagon, and transfer types of propaganda. During the World War when it came to name calling it usually portray the enemy. For instance Japan and Germany during WWI and Russia included later in WWII were shown in a negative light.
Nationalism lead to war due to how it changed the people 's perception of their own country, as well as how these countries want to have more control/power. Nationalistic propaganda was a major influence on the war, mostly due to how entire populations would base their opinions on what they read and/or saw. This propaganda would discuss how the country was powerful and deserved much more power, leading the people into thinking they could easily win a war, and how fighting a war was important for the growth of their country. One variable that echoed throughout America was propaganda. Propaganda was a major influence in the rally for overall support in America during World War II. The propaganda’s intentions in World War II can be broken down into three major categories: war efforts, Anti-German and Anti-Japanese backing, and homefront endeavors.
Propaganda is used to persuade people’s views and lead them to make decisions. This method of persuasion can be found everywhere, including in newspapers, posters, speeches, radio, films, and more. In WWI, the US government aimed to foster patriotism and nationalism through propaganda, portraying heroic soldiers and noble causes to emphasize citizens' duty to support their country. They portrayed the enemy negatively to create an “us vs. them” mentality, using dehumanizing terms to justify the war and encourage public opposition. To maintain army strength, propaganda motivated enlistment by appealing to men’s sense of duty, bravery, and honor, sometimes shaming those who didn't enlist.
The stand out topics in the course was World War I and World War II. These were stand out topics for me because these are my favorite periods of history. I found the propaganda presented throughout the course to be interesting. I found it interesting because there was always a clear bias for a specific person or idea in each image or video. Plus, the people were easily tricked by the images.
During WWII Germany was recruiting troops to the SS, a special force for nazi Germany. Nazi Germany wanted more troops and more power in order to take over more countries in Europe. The party was lead by no one other than Adolf Hitler, they had pride for their country and nationality. He had many speeches regarding the devastating state of Germany economy wise after the Great Depression in the US saying if they fight communism and the jews all their problems will be solved (History.com). Hitler tried recruiting troops to the Waffen-SS party and he had done that among speeches and nazi propaganda, portraying the ‘right side of the truth.
Propaganda was used very much in the Great War. It was used to cause bias throughout the war. It was used to shape international opinion pointing towards both sides of the war. If companies took sides based on propaganda, they would beigin putting limits on what the other side of the conflict had. This is why both sides used advertisement as propaganda.
During World War One many methods were used to get citizens involved. Although women and children could not legally enter the war, they also had jobs to finish. The only problem is how to get them involved with these jobs and help out with The Great War. Propaganda was a popular method used throughout the U.S. to help the war effort. Propaganda is a message given to the general public to support an opinion on an idea, usually political and in this case, the war.
The Nazis were a party that disliked “perfect” people. The best way to fix this problem in the Nazi’s vision was to get rid of anybody that wasn’t perfect to Nazi standards. This way of trying to fix their problem led to a massive worldwide crisis. During World War II, Nazis used propaganda to push their war efforts. The Nazis manipulated people in many ways which ended up convincing people to support the Nazis instead of doing what was right.
During this time, during World War Two, the Holocaust, Germany was full of Nazis attempting to “protect” the German race. Persecution and subjective judgment towards the Jews based on Germany’s leader, Hitler’s ideas continued to permeate throughout his land. No one could stop him, and why would anyone try to? A person of that kind of power is very controlling, manipulative and is unable to do it all by the honest truth. One cleverly disguises and skews the truth, or in other words, uses propaganda.
