This chapter discusses the role of civil rights in the United States. The primary goals of the chapter are explaining the historical impact of oppression, analyzing the social injustices present in today’s society, explaining the processes used to change civil rights policies, and examining ongoing civil rights issues. The chapter defines civil rights as rights that guarantee individuals freedom from discrimination, either from the government or society. This is different than civil liberties, which are freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.
During the new south period many groups gained new freedoms. African Americans in particular gained the right to vote, and citizenship, but that wasn't the end of the racial injustices they faced. Jim Crow laws prevented them from interracial marriage, using white only utilities, and many other things. Furthermore, Anti-Semitism troubled the Jewish population. Finally riots broke out between whites, and blacks such as the riot of 1906.
Injustice is the lack of fairness in justice directed towards an individual or group. There are numerous accounts of injustices in our society today, some may be observed as directed towards criminals, races, and those with special needs or disabilities. In the novel Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper, the main character Melody suffers from a disease called cerebral palsy. This disease prevents her from speaking and being able to control her own movements. She has a photographic memory, but because of her disability she is prevented from speaking her mind and many doubt her ability to think on her own.

Our society has been subject to different forms of injustice for hundreds of years, such as slavery followed by decades segregation and discrimination. Discrimination is a common thread in the United States throughout the years, and even though slavery has ended, discrimination continues today in many forms. People who have felt discriminated against have responded in many ways from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s to the Black Lives Matter movement of today. Los Angeles in the 1990s was still a place of segregation that led to discrimination and racial tension. The Los Angeles riots (or the Rodney King riots) in 1992, were another painful but eye opening event in the long fight for justice.

There are many things that makes up sociology. Sociology is consisted of a few main terms, difference, privilege, inequality, and oppression. Difference is anything that sets an individual apart from the social norms of a culture.
To me, a social injustice is an act in which an individual or group of individuals are not treated fairly based on his or her gender, sexuality, citizenship status, and/or ethnicity. social injustices arise when individuals, who should be considered as equals, are treated unequally. This is caused by barriers, such as racism, oppression, discrimination, and sexism. Social injustices will not be fixed until the individuals who do not respect others start realizing that it is not our differences that should be held against us, but embraced and glorified. Everyone is different, not one person is the same as the next.

If Abraham Lincoln hadn 't worked hard to present these ideals to the American culture, we would be living in a very different world. A world where women would be deprived of basic rights, and where children 's education would not mean as much as it does today.
Men make laws to instill order in a society and prevent chaos in any shape or form. Naturally, laws will always be somewhat unjust because it is impossible to consistently construct laws that directly and equally benefit all members of a society. There will always be a majority that makes the laws and a minority that has to obey the laws. Although laws are usually the standard of morality by which we live by, they must be disobeyed in certain situations. These situations are, but not limited to, an undemocratic formation of aforementioned laws, laws that are inherently unjust according to human law which can be synonymous with God’s law.
