Self-esteem makes up for a large part of a person’s worth, feelings, and identity. Though no hard evidence exists that pinpoints what exactly causes low self-esteem and self-worth, researchers discover many popular and probable causes all of the time (Emler, 2002). According to M. Scott Peck, a person’s self-esteem determines how he or she will act and respond to everyday challenges in life (LaTour, 2014). For example, people with high self-esteem are confident in themselves and overcome most minor, everyday challenges, while people with low self-esteem feel timid and are less likely to overcome those same challenges. Whether a person develops a high self-esteem or low self-esteem about himself or herself relies largely on his or her childhood and what kind of experiences he or she had. . Parenting is one of the main influences of self-esteem, and the level of self-esteem depends greatly on the degree of support or neglect a parent gives a child (Emler, 2002). When a person abuses someone physically, verbally, or sexually, feelings of abandonment and shame arise and that person’s feelings about himself/herself drastically drop.
