In the book Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, an insight about life is presented through the meaningful texts. Nightjohn and Sarny both persevere through hard times. The narrator, Sarny, is an 11 year old—at the beginning of the story— girl who lives on Old Waller´s plantation in the South. Through the eyes of a child, the reader gets to understand how daily life was on a plantation for a slave. Nightjohn, an older male slave, comes in bad—which means that Old Waller brought him in with shackles around his neck, and no clothes on—and later on in the story teaches Sarny how to read and write.
She uses this strategy to provide an example that sticks with the reader, because it evokes emotions, and because it demonstrates the contrast characters before and while in the camps, which emphasize the central idea of the novel. In summary, by doing so she is also able to clarify how the camps changed the lives of these people because it makes the readers feel more attached to the story and therefore have a better understanding of the author’s goals and
These events shape the audiences response to the novel and manipulate how we perceive these issues. Figurative language has been used in this text to portray the horrific scenes depicted in the prologue. Fellows’ most gruesome experience is illustrated through similes which enables the reader to visualise the horrid experience. He explains how the “wound opened up like a flower… worm-like creatures oozing and wriggling out of it like spaghetti” which compares this unthinkable experience to items we are more familiar with. By incorporating this simile, Fellows is able to manipulate the audience into being shocked and disgusted by the conditions of this prison.
Throughout the narrative, the author includes his personal stories about experiencing the violence of slavery first-hand. For example, on page 20, he writes about the first time he witnessed a slave, his own aunt, getting the whip. “The louder she screamed, the harder he whipped; and where the blood ran fastest, there he whipped longest…I remember the first time I ever witnessed this horrible exhibition… It struck me with awful force. It was the blood-stained gate, the entrance to the hell of slavery…” The author including his experience of his aunts whipping, in detail, appeals to the emotions of the reader.

When the prisoner was looking "towards the South", he said "There was some sense of freedom in the vast expanse, inaccessible though it was to me, as of compared with the narrow darkness of the courtyard. Looking out of this, I felt that I was indeed in prison, and I seemed to want a breath of fresh air, though it were of the night" (lines 38-41). Along with this, a feeling had overcome the captives body and he said, "I feel the dread of this horrible place overpowering me; I am in fear-in awful fear-and there is no escape for me; I am encompassed about with terrors that I dare not think of" (lines 55-56). The use of the first person point of view of the prisoner was able to establish the central idea of the fear that he was imprisoned and was not going to be able to

This represents pathos to create the subject of freedom by way of showing simply come cruel they may be treated. Mothers are used for breeding but, don't even get to keep their children in the end. It’s even worst to think that Sarny as a child doesn’t realize what she has lost and thinks it not only normal but okay from children to be taken away from their parent and passed on for someone to take come on till they themselves are old enough to work and to create the theme of freedom by showing how old hearted the ‘master’ is that it is clear he enjoys the pain he causes and that he makes the other slaves watch in a way of a silent threat or promise that this could and will happen to them if they too step out of line.
Life is “trapped” in school. In contrast, the animal in Emancipation: A Life Fable, is actually kept in a cage. Similarly, both have to be patient, to wait for their freedom. For example, at the end of Boy’s Life, Mrs. Neville, the main character’s teacher, keeps the main character after the bell rings, prolonging his wait for summer vacation. In Emancipation: A Life Fable, the animal was born in a cage, and had to wait for most of its life for the day its cage was left open by accident.

An American Slave,” Douglass discusses the horrors of being enslaved and a fugitive slave. Through Douglass’s use of figurative language, diction and repetition he emphasizes the cruelty he experiences thus allowing readers to under-stand his feelings of happiness, fear and isolation upon escaping slavery. Figurative language allocates emotions such as excitement, dread and seclusion. As a slave you have no rights, identity or home. Escaping slavery is the only hope of establishing a sense of self and humanity.
This is shown when the characters in this novel speak out against a concept they know nothing about. Therefore, the literary terms an author uses can make an immense impact to the connections the reader makes to a novel, and help to shape a theme that is found throughout
The article, “How Higher Salaries Could Save the Teaching Profession” written by Cindy Long, shares why teachers should have higher salaries from the start and the impact it would have on the community. Long begins by including quotes from Florida teacher Seth Knolhoff, who shares how the lack of pay is affecting him and his family as well as what actions he might just be forced to take as a result. Long then goes on to share that Florida is having trouble keeping teachers or getting them in the first place because of the struggles to get raises each year since there is no guarantee, and also since there is no cost of living pay increase in place for Florida educators. She next discusses the changes being made in other states, such as Illinois

Most high schools with football or basketball teams also have cheerleaders. Whether cheerleading is a sport or not is a well known issue, likely to be discussed. The enthusiastic girls with pom-poms, white shoes, and skirts, those are cheerleaders.
Captivity is defined as the state of being imprisoned or confined. A tragic experience is given a whole new perspective from Louise Erdrich 's poem, “Captivity”. Through descriptive imagery and a melancholic tone, we can see the poem and theme develop in her words. Erdrich takes a quote from Mary Rowlandson’s narrative about her imprisonment by the Native Americans and her response to this brings readers a different story based off of the epigraph. Louise Erdrich compiles various literary devices to convey her theme of sympathy, and her poem “Captivity” through specific and descriptive language brings a whole new meaning to Mary Rowlandson’s narrative.
In the novel Before We Were Free, Julia Alvarez explores the theme of freedom, in more depth, how freedom comes at a cost. The main character, Anita, and her family are forced to leave their country to escape their dictator, Rafael Trujillo, of the Dominican Republic in order to be free. Although, nothing this serious would be executed without a cost. Lucinda, Anita’s older sister, is forced to choose between accepting Turillo’s proposal to be his lover or go to the states and hope for her family to meet her there. Mami says that she doesn’t want her daughter to work as a maid in America, but then Papi cuts her off to say, “Would you prefer she be Mr. Smith’s little querida?(pg.69 p.6)”.
