Blackfish written by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. From the start attraction at Sealand of the Pacific in 1969, the aquarium grew attention for their orcas that would perform. Years later a two year old whale was captured and arrived in 81’. His name was Tilikum, coming in at two years old and 4,000 pounds. How do you go about taking orcas out of their setting, changing how they feel, and go about certain lies of how situations occurred?
Blackfish, a documentary by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, a historically observed impact of the captivity of killer whales. This Documentary focuses on the orca Tilikum, who was captured off the coast of Iceland. On February 21, 1991, Sealand trainer Keltie Byrne fell into the pool with Tilikum. She was pulled to the bottom by Tilikum, tossed around, and drowned. It took Sealand employees two hours to recover her.
A former trainer of Tilikum explains his thoughts on why the orca acts out violently, “…you understand that he's killing, not to be a savage. He's not killing because he's just crazy. He's not killing because he doesn't know what he's doing. He's killing because he's frustrated, and he's got aggravations, and he has no outlet for it.” The use of anaphoras is also seen when celebrity and talk show host, Whoopi Goldberg, speaks on the awful events, “These are wild animals and they are unpredictable because we don't speak whale.
The events following this attack prove that there is an issue with these whales in captivity. The police report on the attack on Dawn first claimed that she slipped or “fell” into the pool, when she was actually pulled in by the whale. The lies told to the public clearly showed an issue with aggression. Not only did they lie once, they continued to change the story. After saying she slipped and fell, they then said that the whale grabbed her ponytail.
The story that made it around the world and back, caused quite the controversy about whether orcas should be putting on shows was the senior SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. Brancheau was a top SeaWorld orca trainer and people say she was very upbeat about her job, always happy, and loved getting to be a trainer at SeaWorld. Brancheau died in February of 2010 from being pulled into the pool and being forced underwater. This would have been the third death performed by
In 2010, a well-known trainer of SeaWorld Orlando, Dawn Brancheau was murdered during a performance with Tilikum the orca in front of an audience. Blackfish claims the incident was caused from anger, although, SeaWorld claims the accident was due to trainer error. Psychologist explains how humans could also become mentally ill if one was to live in a crowded bathtub for an extensive period of time. Blackfish predicts the reason behind Tilikum’s bizarre outbreak with Brancheau was because he had grown mentally unstable and furious due to his captivity. It is said if the orcas have a healthy mind and body, they will hold a more cheery lifestyle.
Everyone knows that one day they will eventually die and their earthly life does not last forever, but no one knows what comes after. Each person has their views and opinions about what happens to the after they die but there is only one right answer and no one really knows. In the book People of the Whale, the author Linda Hogan creates a specific message for the readers to challenge themselves and their thinking about what really happened to the main character Thomas and if he is dead or alive. Hogan ends the book with the readers still very unsure and lets the readers choose their own ending to the story. Hogan’s style of writing is to ensure the readers are left with a message and uncertain understanding, leaving them questioning the end
I think that SeaWorld is an amazing facility. I love the fact that they rescue sea creatures from their inevitable death. I love the fact that children love to come here. I love the fact that this place causes children to subconsciously learn something. I love to bring my kids here on the weekend to watch the shows that the trainers put on with the orcas.

THE GODFATHER AND MICHAEL CORLEONE’S RISE TO POWER Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, Schindler’s List, Forrest Gump, and Casablanca are some of the most well-known and popular films of all time, with each of these making an appearance on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest movies of all time (AFI’s, 2023). Another one of these popular movies, and one I hear about often, is The Godfather. Now that I have seen this crime film and studied its cinematography, I can understand why it is so renowned. There are a variety of film choices that are meticulous and thorough. These details highlight the messages that the film is trying to convey, especially the messages surrounding the main character, Michael Corleone.
Orcas are incredibly smart, so the mother orcas would swim away from where the herding was happening. As a result to this, SeaWorld began releasing planes that would fly over the sea and find the mothers, because the orcas had to come up for air eventually. They would throw bombs into the water, so the orcas would be forced to go into nets. One of the whales, named Tilikum, who recently died in January of 2017, was kidnapped from the ocean at the young age of two. A man named Ted Griffin, who helped capture the whales, killed a mother whale in front of her daughter, to later be named Shamu; the first performing whale at SeaWorld.
“A long time ago, my ancestor Paikea came to this place on the back of a whale. Since then, in every generation of my family, the first born son has carried his name and become the leader of our tribe... until now” (Caro & Sanders, 2003). Whale Rider is the story of a girl, Pai, whose twin brother and mother die in child birth. Koro, Pai’s grandfather and leader of the Maori tribe, is devastated that their future leader has died. Years later Koro is determined to find a leader and begins to teach and train the boys, in which Pai is not allowed to join because she is a girl.

There were many instances where the killer whale has been misunderstood based on the weighed out factors of said instances. Stated by an article titled “Killer Whales: A Reputation Deserved?”, in Victoria, Canada 1991 at Sealand, a woman fell into the killer whale pool and was repeatedly tossed around until she drowned. When the killer whales tossed her around it was not their intention to kill her they were only playing. In Orlando, Florida yet another event occurred producing the same results, although the common fact remains killer whales were in captivity when these human being were killed. The whales most likely thought these women were fish not people.
The Whale Rider repeatedly establishes that culture and tradition are connected to identity and purpose. Koro Apirana has strong cultural beliefs, he strongly abides to them as his position as chief and is particular when is comes to finding a new leader for Whangara. In addition, Porourangi had his cultural duties to fulfill as eldest son, yet he decided to leave Whangara for work, thereafter realizing Whangara was where he belongs. Lastly, Kahu’s destiny relies upon the past and her ancestor the whale rider, she was very closely knit with her culture and she could never disregard her purpose in Whangara. Therefore, culture can guide you and give you purpose, since it uniquely defines you and shapes who you are.
