Forest Acres is a community located in Richland County of Columbia, South Carolina. It is a community that was incorporated in the year 1935 near the waters of Dent’s Pond, now known as Forest Lake, due to John Hughes Cooper and James Henry Hammond both having real estate interests in the area. After Cooper purchased Dent’s Pond (Forest Lake) and 1,700 acres of land, Hammond purchased 67 acres from Cooper on Quinine Hill; developing it into a suburban area for local businessmen who worked in the downtown area. In order for Cooper and Hammond to name this location, a petition was signed by residents; voting on whether to name the area Forest Acres or Quinine Hill. She displays more statistical facts about how wolves are being hunted and trapped on a regular basis. There is an estimated 60,000 wolves in Canada. Farley Mowat studies the grey wolf in his book Never Cry Wolf (1963). Throughout the book, Mowat uses the rhetorical strategies pathos, logos, and personification to disprove the misconception about wolves. The book is about a scientist (Farley Mowat) that flies into the Canadian Barrens in order to research wolves. His goal is to prove that wolves are killing thousands of caribou for sport, but he find that the wolves are not to blame for the decrease in caribou populations.

In the book, “Never Cry Wolf,” there are two different opinions as to why the deer population is declining. The first opinion is the one the government wants to impress on people, and it is the one that most people believe. They believe that the decline in the population of deer is being caused by the wolves. “…because their grievance is the complaint that the wolves are killing all the deer, and more and more of our fellow citizens are coming back from more and more hunts with less and less deer” (Mowat 9). They believe that the wolves are vicious and that they kill for enjoyment.

While most modern Americans are most familiar with the gray wolf, when Europeans first colonized the New World, the red wolf was likely the first wolf species that they came in contact with. Moreover, since the red wolf was the first wolf species that the colonists came into contact with, it was also the first to be persecuted (Hinton et al.). The consequences of this first interaction have ricochet across history as the red wolf was hunted to extinction in 1980. Wolves have been around for millions of years and our ancestors were able to hunt them so why can’t we? Hunting isn’t a cheap past time, in order to even attempt to get an animal you must first purchase a license every season. Hunting is well regulated between the federal and state governments in order to prevent over hunting. The problem that can come up is illegal hunting and poaching.
