The Use of Rhetorical Devices in the “Google Home” Super Bowl Commercial Companies and other forms of media strategically use the three rhetorical appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos, to market goods and/or promote ideas. The appeals have been used for centuries are still prevalent in all types of modern day propaganda. If used correctly, ethos, pathos, and logos can be used as clever tactics to engrain information into the brains of consumers. One of the more notable ways that brands use these appeals are commercials. Google, the world’s most famous multinational technology company, used the three appeals to reach success.
In many of the colleges today a "hookup" has changed in definition. In other words, hookup once meant a romantic relationship but, Hookups today can be "all about throwing off the bonds of relationships and dating for carefree sex" (Freitas). At least that is what Donna Freitas says in the article "Time to stop hooking up. (You know you want to.)". Through the article she explains how a hookup has changed and how it has to stop because of it affecting the way teenagers see a relationship.
The 1975 Pulitzer Prize winning author Annie Dillard discovered a life changing theory while trying to evade the frenzied human world. The theory that introduces a life is lesson everyone needs to live a full and satisfying life. By employing emotional charged verbiage and a juxtaposing of humans versus nature in Living Like a Weasel, Dillard theorizes that life should be lived with the same determination and persistence of a weasel. When proposing a very forward theory, Dillard must use some bold choices to prove her ideals of life. “Grasp”and “seize” are desperate words used in situations where the author needed to emotionally move the audience (Dillard 164-167).
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
The essay I chose is “The Top Reason to Adopt a Pet” by the Humane Society. The reason I chose this particular essay is adoption is very near and dear to my heart and I think everyone should adopt pets. The author organizes the essay using eight different points of why you should adopt a pet. Also the author doesn’t use high style to get her point across.
In “The Benefits of Divorce and Unemployment for Parents of College Students,” Callie Belback, satirically discusses the problems of high tuition and student loans in higher education (1-3). First, Belback addresses the issue of incredibly expensive education with not enough financial aid rewarded to college students forcing people to spend years out of college trying to pay back loans (1). She then points out that with these extremely high costs, families should do everything they can to lower the cost and proposes that parents of college students get divorced and “quit their jobs.” (2). Subsequently, she lists numerous advantages of getting divorced, like independence for students and parent and creating a stronger love between couples,
Throughout the essay, Charles Murray stresses the idea that college is the wonderland of finding oneself and to find the career that one would want to follow for the rest of their lives. “College is seen as the open sesame to a good job and a desirable way for adolescents to transition to adulthood. Neither reason is as persuasive as it first appears.” Murray, C (2008) Practically spoken, this is not normally the case. College is a fair amount of work, much more work than one would normally acquire through any course of a high school or secondary school setting.
It wasn’t until after reading this piece several times that I began encountering flaws within her reasoning. Although I agree with Bird that college is a waste of all these for some students, I also believe that Bird does not provide strong enough evidence to persuade her readers into thinking this. First off, when choosing the material to include in her essay, Bird should have used evidence that contained more certainty in order to solidify her claim. A recent study conducted by Dr. Paula England examines the sexual behavior of “14,000 heterosexual students at 19 universities about their sexual behavior.” The study showed that over the course of four years, college seniors hooked up with an average of eight people. This just shows that college students are not getting “lucky” as much as I thought they did. Then, in another survey, expressed in The Hookup Elites, Lisa Wade conveys that 91% of college students agree that their lives are dominated by the hookup culture.
According to The Atlantic newsletter, "the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center suggests that college-enrollment rates have actually decreased—and for the fourth straight year, all despite massive increases in federal aid for students who can’t afford tuition. The number of students enrolling in colleges and universities this year is 1.7 percent lower than it was last year" (Wong). After high school many students are faced with the decision of either going into college, going into a life outside of schooling, or going into a work force. The quantity of men and women going into college is slowly diminishing; however, the individuals choosing to attend college are attending for educational reasons, for job reasons, or for family
Julio Cortázar’s short story, "House Taken Over," presents a case on the consequences of isolationist values as well as the dangers of acting in self-interest. Cortázar carefully and deliberately lays out literary elements such as symbolism and metaphor, as well as characterization, to argue that the pursuit of personal gain at the expense of others can have disastrous implications for both individuals and society as a whole. " House Taken Over" tells the story of two siblings who lived in each other's comfort, rarely leaving their home since they never saw the need to. They were rich, with more than enough money coming in from their family’s farms to live comfortably.
College represents something different to everyone. The student will be accountable for attending class, navigating around campus, and obtaining help when needed. When young people leave home for the academic world, they embark on a new journey that includes independence, adventure, and uncovering their individuality. Most students are not prepared for the trials of academe and end up feeling overwhelmed. College life can be a hard adjustment.
