Introduction
To Kill A Mockingbird (TKAM) written by Harper Lee is a novel that reflects the notions of conscience, courage, and conviction through the eyes of Jean Louise (Scout) Finch. The novel takes you on an investigation with this little girl, Scout as she matures and grows by lessons taught to her by her wise father, Atticus Finch. Scout is living throughout the Great Depression in her small town Maycomb Country and experiences prejudice and racism through the events which span across the novel. Scout matures into a genuine and respectful girl and learns many important lessons from her father which teach her how to see the good in people and to never judge a person based on the colour of their skin or their

The importance of courage is shown through the characters and events. A character who displays courage through her bravery and strength is Mrs Dubose. Besides her racial criticism, Atticus Finch looked up to Mrs Dubose as an example of courage and quoted that “ She was bravest the bravest woman I knew”. This quote said by Atticus shows how he respects others and only sees the good in people. “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do”. This quote was spoken by Atticus as a lesson to Scout on her journey to maturity and states that courage involves the bravery to overcome your fears. In the town of Maycomb County there is a lot misleading gossip about Arthur (Boo) Radley that he is a “malevolent phantom” and is the one that breaths on people’s azaleas causing them to freeze in the cold. As the novel progress’ Scout is maturing and becoming more aware of events occurring around the county and uses her courage to confront Boo Radley as a sign of respect and appreciation for stopping Mr Bob Ewell’s attempt of stabbing her. Atticus taught Jem and Scout that “You never really understand a person-until you climb into their skin and walk around in it”.
