I immensely enjoyed reading To Be a Slave due to the impact it has had on me as not only a white person but also a human being. Having read many books about slavery before, most being historical fiction, I started reading this book under the impression that I would not learn anything new. I was horribly wrong. Each narrative in this novel changed me incredibly. Some narratives had a smaller impact than others, but nonetheless, it was still something. After reading for so long, I started to feel as if I knew the strong people I read about in this novel. I grieved for them. I mourned for them. I wanted to help them. Every time I turned the page, I had to brace myself. I wanted to learn about the sorrows and hardships they went to, but I didn’t
