Slaves are very hard workers that are forced to do the work of their owner. Slaves have a very hard life and usually face sickness and death. Slavery is a form of exploitation. Slaves were considered property and would lose many of their rights. One-fifth of the profits go to the king that are obtained from New Spain.
In the documents “Considering the Evidence: Voices from the Slave Trade” it shows how the Atlantic slave trade was an enormous enterprise and enormously significant in modern world history. In document 15.1 - The Journey to Slavery it talks about the voice of an individual victim of the slave trade known as Olaudah Equiano. Equiano was taken from his home and sold into the slave trade. He worked for three different families while in the slave trade but what is different about him is that he learned to read and write while being a slave. He traveled extensively as a seaman aboard one of his masters' ships, and was allowed to buy his freedom in 1766.

(Document 5) Plantation owners were upset with servants who thought dependently so they switched to a different source of labor, slaves mostly from Africa, in hopes of enforcing more restrictions and buying slaves for cheap. Evidently, this thinking became popular among plantation owners because eventually, the system of slavery overtook the indentured servants.
From the time of the American Revolution in 1776, to the year 1852, there has been many causes to the opposition to slavery. Some have shown the support for increased opposition while others have shown to not support this opposition. This has caused many disputes about who is in the right. There is plenty of evidence between the two groups which were either supporting the opposition to slavery or they were not supporting the opposition. Three causes exist in support of and against this opposition: Social Darwinism, increased tolerance, and the need to unite the nation.
During the Reconstruction Era from 1865 to 1877, Southern white people were segregated to a large extent between wealthy plantation owners and poor white farmers. Both E. B. Seabrook and a New York Times’ writer compare poor white farmers’ horrid lifestyles to freed slaves because there was an extreme similarity between the two. Although the slaves were emancipated as a result of the Civil War, they underwent economic hardships similar to poor white farmers in the South. In fact, the New York Times author makes the argument that the poor whites lived in a worse condition than freed blacks. - “The use of slave labor… tended to create a monopoly in the hands of the capitalists, and increased, in an almost insuperable degree, the difficulty of a poor man’s rising, but making nearly impossible the enlarging of his sphere of operations” (Seabrook).

Many of the freedmen opted to sharecropping, a contract in which freedmen were able to rent small plots of land and pay the rent back with the selling of the produce. Although blacks received some resources for their work, the contracts that they signed were biased against them and due to the lack of produce it would eventually lead to the freedmen becoming bankrupt.
