( Fences page 39). When Rose and Troy are talking about Cory, Rose says all Cory wants is for him to say “Good job, son.” Troy responds by saying that nobody is going to help Cory in the real world. Cory needs to be independent and make his own way. Troy throughout the book also used baseball to teach Cory lessons.
Etta is responsible for the fences and we can see this because she cares for it and planted seeds along its border because the fence means something to her, “Etta made the fence a boundary line.” To her the fences signifies ownership, a sense of privacy and private property doing it just “like white people do in Winslow”; on the other hand, to Reyna, Juanita and the other member of the community who follow the old ways, the fences are a representation of the difference between the Native American’s and the white American’s ways, they feel as if Etta has forgotten where she came from. The fences may stand tall but so will the community’s ways. Not only were they unable to contain the animals around the community, making Cheromiah chase his horses
The dynamic between a father and son is never a simple journey, but instead, comes with curveballs thrown left and right. In Fences, by August Wilson, he writes of the hardships between a father and son relationship and the difficulties a father has over trying to shield his son from life’s cruelties, to the salvation found between being fenced in and finally being placed outside of the fence—both literally and metaphorically. Through out the play, there are numerous confrontations between Troy and Cory—whether it be when Cory asks Troy whether or not he loves him or when Cory throws his football helmet towards the direction of Troy—which show the difficult and complicated relationship between father and son. Also prevalent in the play, was the lack of a father and male figure in Troy’s own life, during his most influential and important years. Troy recognizes that and the way he was/is treated by society in general and wanted to “help” his son by showing Cory the difficult lessons Troy learned during his youth, as a way to lessen the pain that would be inflicted on his son later on.
His relationship with Bono shows this clearly. For it always appears as though Bono only listens and comments in their conversations. It is rare that he brings up a new topic, and when he does Troy is sure to make it go in a direction he wants it to. Rose has to be the worst victim of Troy’s selfishness because Troy never even considers her feelings or how he might hurt her. He also ignores the responsibility he owes her in being her husband, all because he wanted to indulge himself with another women.
Troy constantly tries to get the last word with Bono, and treats him and what he says as unimportant. Bono tries to give friendly advice when he visits Troy to help him cut wood for the fence. Bono tells Troy that Rose loves him and that it’s a bad decision for him to be seeing another woman. Troy says “Hell, nigger, I don’t need nobody to tell me my wife loves me” (Wilson, 61). Although Bono is trying to offer Troy advice as a friend, Troy takes what Bono says as a personal attack.
The title of the play, “Fences" , symbolizes the function of a fence literally, which is to keep people in and out. Troy & Cory are in the same bubble, because they are father and son. This bubble is guarded by a fence. In that bubble, they experience things together, including the conflicts they have about Cory wanting to play football. Cory understands in order for him to be able to move on with his life, he needs to come at peace with the resentment and anger he has towards his father.
In Act One, scene four of the play Bono and Troy have a chat in Troy’s backyard about their childhood and their relationship with their fathers. The author uses the conversation between Troy and Bono as a way to flashback to Troy's troubled childhood and reveal more about why Troy acts the way he does. Troy’s childhood was plagued with
The play, Fences by August Wilson, is about Troy Maxson and his struggling family relationships. A recurring idea throughout the story is the construction of a fence around Troy's home. Troy's fence could symbolize two things, Troy is trying to protect his family from the outside world, or Troy is isolating himself from his own family. As the construction of the fence progresses, the more severely damaged Troy's relationships become. In this play, the underlying message is that, despite the fact that fences can both protect and isolate, Troy’s fence isolates him from his family rather than to protect his family.
B.) I believe the title, “Fences”, symbolizes how Troy keeps attempting to fence his family members in from their full potential.
She requested that Cory and Troy work on building a fence in the backyard. Rose hopes that the fence will keep the people she loves close to her and protected from the harshness of the world. Unlike Troy, Rose is a realist who has love and high hopes for Cory. When Rose evesdrop on Cory and Troy, she overheard their argument about football, and talks to Troy after Cory leaves. Troy explains to Rose why he will not allow Cory to play football and tells her that she’s been mothering Cory too much.
He becomes a "woman less man". In addition, the fence appears to symbolize thedifference in personalities of Troy and Rose. It takes Bono to make Troy realize that "Rose wants tohold on to [him]", for Rose gives everything she has to Troy, including her entire life andlove. Yet, in contrast, Troy's in no rush to build any type of fence. He
The Major War Criminal Trials served justice to those who held major roles in maintaining Nazi agenda. The trials took place in Nuremberg, Germany. Unlike traditional courts, the Nuremberg trials had a tribunal or a council of judges oversee the trial. The four major superpowers- France, The United States, Russia, and Great Britain- had one judge in the tribunal. Moreover, as all four countries had different legislative, the tribunal decided that the defendants could hire their own lawyer and determining sentences would be a joint task.
The fence symbolizes Rose and Troy’s differences in their personalities because they both use it in different ways. Bono says, “Some people build fences to keep people out...and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold onto you all. She loves you” (61). This quote shows that Rose may have wanted the fence to be built to help Troy and Cory bond.
Fences by August Wilson is truly a phenomenal and well written play about the hard times for African Americans and the struggles between a family. Throughout the play Troy, the protagonist, is building a fence under the wish of his wife, Rose. Troy doesn't understand why she wants him to build the fence but his friend Bono does. The fence symbolizes many things in life like love, separation, and protection. Bono describes this as “Some people build fences to keep people out… and other people build fences to keep people in.
