Final “Driving While Stupid” written by Dave Barry explains to his readers why Miami, Florida is the most dangerous place to drive in in the world because of the reckless drivers. Though it is not a fact that Miami has the most dangerous drivers, he explains why he believes it could be the most dangerous by telling the readers the experiences he has been in in many other places. The way he gets his argument across is by using many different hyperboles to emphasis the main point of this short story. In the beginning of his short story, Dave Barry, gives the readers a setting of the “worst darned drivers in the world.”
In his short story, O’Brien uses words and phrases that help to create the intended setting of the work. The author establishes the setting by describing the social atmosphere around him. “The only certainty that summer was moral confusion.” Tim O’Brien uses this quote to explain the mood in America during the Vietnam War. Many details were not known, such as the type of war the country was fighting, whether a civil war or a national liberation, or who caused the war.

In How I Learned to Drive, Paula Vogel uses several techniques of Brecht’s Epic Theatre. Some of them are the alienation effect, direct address to the audience and disruption of time. The purpose of the alienation affect is to distance the audience and to provoke them to think about what they are seeing. It does not involve an emotional response, but rather a rational one. How I Learned to Drive is a memory play that deals with issues of sexual abuse and victimization, but it is also a play that deals with acceptance and forgiveness.

In the short story “The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn’t Flash Red Anymore”, by Sherman Alexie communicates the idea that hope may be found in the darkest of places but nothing changes if you dont try. The main character, Victor, witnesses the rise and fall of basketball stars in the reservation in which he lives. While talking to his friend, Adrian, he notices the latest basketball star, Julius Windmaker getting into trouble yet the two friends just laugh it off and reminisce about the old days. This repeats itself when, a year later, Julius shows up to a basketball game drunk and the boys don't do anything about it The repetition of the traffic signal and the characters continual negligence of having it fixed enforces the theme.
I just finished another one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series called The Third Wheel by: Jeff Kinney. I am really enjoying this book because the author kept me interested and I could never put the book down. This is the second time I have read this book and I liked it just as much as I read it the second time. Since the book is a journal about a made up character most of the book is written in a third person… limited omniscient.
