To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, published in 1960, is a classic American novel. This book is during the time of segregation in the South, and about a court case. The main characters are; Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, Jean Louise or ‘Scout’ Finch, Jem Finch, Robert Ewell, Maryellen Ewell, Tom Robinson and Calpurnia. Scout is the narrator of the story, during the story Scout is aged 6 to 9, although she is an adult when she tells the story. Jem Finch is Scout’s older brother aged 10-13. Atticus is the single father of Jem and Scout, he is also an attorney, who is assigned with the job to defend Tom Robinson in court. Tom Robinson is a black man who supposedly raped Robert Ewell’s daughter, Maryellen. The Ewell’s are the towns “bums”, …show more content…

Frequently playing with Jem, and making up imaginary stories with the mysterious Boo Radley. Later during the book, Jem and Scout find out that their father Atticus, is representing Tom Robinson, who is a black man, in court. Robinson was accused of raping and beating a white woman, names Maryellen. Both kids began to realize the racial segregation that is occurring during this time. During the time of the court case, the kids’ aunt Alexandra come to live with them. Aunt Alexandra attempts to have a feminine influence on Scout, however, failing to do so. One summer day, when Jem and Scout are walking past their bull-headed neighbor, Mrs. Dubose. After her rude comment, Jem has had enough, and knocks down her plants. As a result, Mrs. Dubose commands Jem to read to her every day, even though she seems to be dying. Scout comes along with Jem, while he goes to read to Mrs. Dubose, and experiences the misery Jem is going through. Throughout this time, both Jem and Scout learn a valuable lesson of bravery. In court, Tom Robinson is convicted even though Atticus has proved that he has not committed the crime of rape. Atticus insults and tries to prove that it was Mr. Ewell that raped his daughter. Mr. Ewell is determined to give revenge for Atticus for insulting him in court. Later, the Finch’s find out that Tom Robinson was killed, and soon the town is relatively back to
