Appearance vs Reality is when you see someone as something and they turn out to be the complete opposite. In the book to kill a mocking bird there was one character that stood out to me that has a lot of appearance vs reality. There being the man, the myth, the legend Arthur (Boo) Radley, there is also Tom Robison, and there is Dolphus Raymond. The most impacted character by appearance vs reality is Tom Robinson because he was put on the court for "raping" Ms. Mayella and beating her. The main reason he is brought to court is that he black and, in that time, they thought the blacks were less than a person. The quote in the book states "There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads--they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life. (295)". This quote is saying that the people were judging Tom by his skin color and that he was charged guilty because of it. They think that since he has a different skin color that he is a liar, cheater, and all around a mean person. But we all know that he is not. …show more content…

He was the Maycomb drunk who always has a paper bag with his drink in it. He also has an African-American partner and they have children together and the people of Maycomb don’t like for that reason. The reality though is that he is the most mature person in Maycomb because he can see through skin color and he is against racism. The people of Maycomb don’t like him very well, so this is what he had to say " 'I try to give 'em a reason, you see. ' '...They could never, never understand that I live like I do because that's the way I want to live.' (268)" This was a way for him to get the people of Maycomb to see through his life as it is. Him doing this is a very smart way of doing that because it will help him not be the person that is in a relationship with the opposite
