Journal Two Madison Loberg Pages Read Since Last Journal: 42 Pages for the quarter: 47 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I am on page 42. This book is about a girl who starts school in a southern, rural town. Along the journey of the book, she meets some crazy people including a boy from her school, and learns more superstitions about the Radley Family. In this journal I will be predicting and evaluating.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus’s closing argument was unsuccessful. In Atticus’s closing argument, he makes it so the jury will assuredly understand. The Jurors are all white and from out of town so they are biased and don’t know the townspeople and how they behave. Atticus tries to connect with the Jury but he was ineffectual. Atticus’s closing argument was not effective because of cognitive bias and he couldn’t persuade his audience.
In society, people would usually associate with others who are the most similar to them since they tend to feel more comfortable around them. For instance, in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, is a story of Mayella Ewell who is a poor, white woman living in a racist environment during the 1930s. Some people will say that Mayella isn’t sincerely powerful and others might disagree. On the contrary, Mayella doesn’t have much capability when it comes down to her low financial status and her gender; however, her race is what makes her highly powerful. Mayella lives in a tremendously poor neighborhood since she “lived behind the town garbage dump”.
Atticus is a nice and outgoing person who is trying to make a change in the town. He is a middle-aged man who lives in the suburbs. Who is also one of the finest lawyers in towns and is good at what he does. “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” … (Lee 90)
Atticus's closing argument in To Kill a Mockingbird is a good display of several talking and writing styles such as ethos, pathos, and logos. His closing argument uses a tone that contributes to the persuasive effectiveness of his argument. Atticus Finch’s speech is an attempt to appeal to the jury to look beyond racial prejudice and to do what is right. I am going to attempt to analyze and show how Atticus uses these rhetorical strategies to contribute to the poignancy and effectiveness of his closing argument.
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros was definitely a novel that exceeded the expectations I had for it prior to reading it. What intrigued me most about this novel, was the fact that it was written in the form of vignettes, a style of writing I had never read before. “Beautiful and Cruel” was one of my favorite vignettes in this novel. Before this vignette, Esperanza began talking about how she didn’t want to be tamed and have the ability to choose what she wants to do. I really enjoyed reading this vignette because it is where we really begin to see Esperanza taking action and fighting against the expectations that have been placed on her because of her gender.
Why did Atticus defend a black man? Justice and being given the chance of a fair trial. Atticus Finch believed that everyone, black or white should be given the chance, to be proven not guilty. Even though some people thought Atticus was wrong in defending Tom Robinson, Atticus knew it was right to defend Tom because he knew everyone deserved a fair trial.
Atticus was a great man. He was kind, caring, respectful, well thought of, level headed, and anything and everything that a good lawyer and father should be. He is one too just wants what 's right, which is why he did his best to defend Tom, when the case shouldn 't have been given to him but a low man who just finished the bar Judge taylor gave him the case because he knew he would give it his all to bring out the truth. He also sees everyone as equals and does not believe that the whites are any better than the blacks. Attics makes points toward the jury that in any other place or time would have been ruled in Toms being not guilty but because of the segregation in the deep south of maycomb the jury had their mind made up before tom even
Atticus Finch was a great lawyer and father to his children in To Kill a Mockingbird. He wanted to help people when no one else would, even if that meant his own life. Even through the rough spots, he kept on pushing, and never gave up! He was a significant man, and we should all learn something from him. Atticus has good morals, loves his children, respects everyone, and always keeps his promises which are good traits for anybody to have.

The kids like to play pretend with their friend Dill about the man who lives in a scary house down the road, Boo Radley. The kids come in a few close counters along the way during these games in which Atticus does not approve. Scouts’ father, a lawyer, is appointed by Judge Taylor to defend Mr. Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a young girl.

Although these two girls are two different skin colors they face the same very harsh world from their own point of view. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout, the main character, has a father, Atticus, and a brother, Jem, that live in the south as a family. Her father is assigned a case as a lawyer to defend a Negro man against rape, throughout that time the family is severely harassed about Atticus’s assignment.
