Sometimes a man or a woman has to put aside their own needs and desires to help a person in great need, even if it isn’t want others say is right or is to their morals wrong. In To Kill a Mockingbird a middle aged lawyer named Atticus was forced to make this decision for a young black man named Tom Robinson who was framed of a crime he didn’t commit. Raping a young white woman. It made perfect sense why the lawyer went out of his way to help the innocent man.
To begin, Atticus should defend Tom because he knows he is a good innocent man. For example, when atticus proves Tom is innocent when cross examining Bob Ewell. “You’re left handed, Mr Ewell” (pg 237) This quote shows how Tom was innocent because Mayella Ewell was beaten by a prominently

Once again during court Scout mentions how Atticus viewed people harassing negros just because they’re black. “Atticus says cheatin’ a colored man is ten times worse than cheatin’ a white man” (pg 269) This shows how Atticus knew how bad colored men are treated when convicted of something they didn’t even do unlike a white one. Crime sentences are much more harsh on them than the rest of us. Also, when talk to the jury Atticus quoted our declaration with: “But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal-there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal to Einstein, and he ignorant man the equal of any college president. That institution, gentlemen, is a court. It can be the Supreme Court of the United States or the humblest J.P. court in the land, or this honorable court which you serve. Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” (pg 274) This strong quote proved that Atticus wants people to put aside what they are told and/or what they think of african americans and to put aside differences and just look at the evidence and decide with that and not with his skin color. To remember that person is a person no matter what race they were born …show more content…
Atticus tells Scout after she was told by a fellow schoolmate he was defence a black man he replied with “...if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something” (pg 100) This displays that he believes if he doesn’t do his job just because he is defending a black man he isn’t anyone anymore. He failed to prove he isn’t prejudice on the job. He failed to show that he can empathize for a fellow human being. Also, he explains to Scout minutes later that he know he can’t relinquish just yet just because of others prejudices because: “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (pg 101) This demonstrates how Atticus is partly not just taking the job because he wants to change people’s minds but also he has to even though he knows he is most likely going to lose. An example of all odds going against people is when the US was fighting the British to gain independence. The United States had very little chance of success but we still managed to pull it off and win our
