It is clear throughout literature that writers use language to inform citizens of social injustices from the past. Most pieces of work are written for this purpose, such as news article and nonfiction books. One author, Harper Lee, examines the extreme racism against African Americans during the 1940s in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In her book, an African American man is falsely accused of raping a young girl.
