Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a story that takes the reader on a journey through the sleepy town of Maycomb, Alabama, in the mid 1930’s. The story revolves around a young white girl named Jean Louise Finch, more commonly known as Scout. Scout’s life is filled with many events, like the Tom Robinson trial, that play a key role in her character development as she grows up in the racist community she is a part of. Throughout the novel, Scout learns that the society she lives in is filled with people who are dangerously influenced by racial prejudice. Scout's coming of age experience is a prominent theme throughout "To Kill a Mockingbird." In chapters 1 through 6, we see Scout starting to develop a sense of empathy and understanding towards others, particularly those who are different from her. For example, in chapter 3 we see Scout trying to understand why Walter Cunningham doesn't have any money to pay back Miss Caroline. This shows Scout's growing awareness of class differences and the struggles that other people may face. Additionally, in chapter 5, Scout learns about the concept of "mockingbirds" and how it's wrong to harm innocent creatures for no reason.

Since Scout is so young, she experiences adult situations that develop her understanding of life. With Jem, Atticus, Cal, and other citizens of Maycomb helping her get through, she molds into a grown up little girl. One event that had a major impact on Scout’s maturity was Tom Robinson’s

At the point in which I am at in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jem is surfacing as the character of interest. Although this book is written in Scout’s perspective, Jem expresses incredible bravery at times, but also noticeable vulnerability. As the oldest sibling, he strives to be the leader of the pack; that is until he has to take the fall. This is expressed in his experiences with the Radley house. “‘You’re too scared to even put your big toe in the front yard.’
The real world isn’t always how we want it to be. The people that are in it aren’t how we want them to be either. When we get older we realize that the world isn’t all flowers and rainbows. Jem from the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee finds that out the hard way. Jem is the older brother to Scout the main character of the book.
Harper Lee composed To Kill a Mockingbird, a top selling novel in 1961. This book is positioned in a very ingenious way from the perspective of Scout Finch.
