The historical fiction story To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee is one of the most widely respected and well known written pieces. It follows Atticus Finch in his battle against Maycomb's racism sickness. It is also a coming of age story for Scout as we watch her face Maycomb’s illness mature and grow as a young girl. The story takes the reader back in time through Scout and Jems past as Scout recalls how her father, Atticus Finch a respected renowned lawyer, fought for Tom Robinson, a young black man falsely accused of rape, by Maycombs disgraces the Ewells. Even though Atticus’ evidence and defense of Tom Robinson was good Tom was still convicted, however through taking this trial Atticus gains the respect of the minority group in Maycomb. Throughout the story we see Atticus constantly treat everyone with respect despite their opinions of him, race, or gender, this quality can’t be said for a majority of maycomb residents and that sets Atticus apart. In support of this we have a conversation Atticus held with Jem “as you say, but to do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable. I strongly advise you to go down and have a talk with Mrs. Dubose,” said Atticus" (Lee 116). This happens directly after a incident where Mrs. Dubose insults Atticus in a disgraceful way “Jem said softly, “She said you lawed for ***** and trash.” “You did this because she said that?” Jem’s lips moved, but his, “Yes sir,” was inaudible” (Lee 116). This illustrates Atticus’ true respectful gentleman personality as even despite what was said about him he refused to disrespect his elders and even tries to show Jem that by telling him to go talk to her, this also doubles to show the type of father figure Atticus
