In the story to kill a mockingbird Jem and Scout try to see people for who they are on the inside, not the color on the outside. Also, not letting others opinions affect theirs. In to kill a mockingbird symbolism is showed many times as it teaches us about racism, innocence, and friendships.

From the start to the end of the story Jem and Scout always wanted to talk to Boo Radley, “someone had filled our knot-hole with cement.”(62) The cement tree created a deeper relationship between the three of them. This reached the goal by being able to have a friendship, in which the cement tree was their connection. This pushed Jem and Scout to be able to find out who their real neighbor was. Overall this motivated Jem and Scout to find a better understanding of Boo Radley. When they were outside, when the fire happened, Boo gave them a blanket. Unfortunately, they were in a state of shock so they didn't even know Boo touched them. This motivated them to understand Boo better. Also showed they had physical contact with one another. The fire scene also helped create a setting. What this does is help create the setting by showing in Maycomb how much of a community they are because the emergency made everyone worried. This happened on page 69 “At the front door, we saw fire spewing from Miss Maudie’s diningroom windows” (Lee, 69). This also connects back to character motivation because it shows Boo wants the same as Jem and Scout. He is motivated to be there friend. And he pursues in doing it by keeping them warm. Boo radley, Jem and Scout had an unlikely friendship and the cement tree symbolized that friendship. “Trees dying,m you plug ´em with cement when their sick.” in the story again and again Jem and Scout got bad views about Boo from the start of the story, they had always thought he was a weird, skinny twig who hates going outside.
