They All Leave the Nest “After all if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this so could I” (Lee 237). In To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee shows children growing up and maturing. She displays main character, Scout, also known as, Jean Louise turning into a lady and her brother, Jem, turning into a man. Lee tackles the struggle of growing up by putting the kids into many different situations where they have to grow up a little bit and make more developed decisions. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents the idea that coming of age is hard to do but, one will later understand that they may have been irrational or unrealistic in the journey of growing up. The kids see things and people differently as they grow up. This is especially shown as events take place for other characters and they react. At the beginning of the book the kids are extremely curious about Boo Radley and why never leaves the Radley house. The come up with many ideas and they even believe that he has nowhere to go. The question things he’s done according to Stephanie Crawford. The question if he’s dead. All they know is that they’ve never seen him for as long as they can remember. But, as the kids grow up they start to understand that he doesn’t leave because he doesn’t want to. Jem said “Scout, I think I’m beginning to understand something. I think I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in the house all this time… it’s because he wants to stay inside.” (Lee 227). This quote backs up that indirect characterization demonstrates growing up and maturing because the kids finally start to understand why Boo remains in the house after having many varying opinions as to why he never leaves and Scout telling the readers over time how they characterized Boo showed how the kids grew
