Education shows us as human beings the importance of hard work and helps us grow and develop to our full potential. Education is a relatively brief topic in this book due to the absence of it, but also the effect that it has on characters, and their ability to make something of themselves. In her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses characterization and dialogue to show that a child deprived of an education will struggle to contribute to society.
Throughout the story, Lee uses dialogue to portray the idea that the children who aren't receiving an education will have a difficult time in society. Lee uses dialogue in the topic of Burris’ education to show how he doesnt have much hope about his education status and well being. Burris is …show more content…

This quote emphasizes his level of education but also his tone of voice makes it aware that he could care less. With the description of Burris already being an Ewell, it is easier to categorize him in a social class and society status which is influenced by his education. Given the fact that he isn't learning anything new and isn't getting the help that he deserves to move on and get a better education, he is lacking a role in society. He also seems unfazed when casually saying he has been in the same grade for 3 years which shows how difficult his education life is but also how that affects his personal life on a more person vs conflict scale. The characterization of Mayella and her beliefs is used to show how she does things in her everyday life that normal kids her age don't. Scout is showing the reality of Mayella Ewell and how she is lacking of an education “There was a lady who came around sometimes and asked Mayella why she didn't stay in school-she wrote down the answer; with two members of the family reading and writing, there was no need for the rest of them to learn-” (208). Mayella is characterized as a character who is a follower of her family. The quote tells us how she isnt in school because she already has family members who have an education and her belief is that there was no need for her or others to get an education. She is saying how she is relying on others to know things that she should be taught and learning in school like other kids her age. She is characterized as a character who relies heavily on others but also doesn't work hard for things she wants. Without an education Mayella is struggling to be a part of society and finding her true identity. She is not only getting an education but is also struggling in her personal life. This just shows how she is struggling in “fitting in” or making something out of herself with the lack of a good education. Lee uses the characterization of Mayella from Tom’s perspective to show how she
